Half reamers

I'm trying to make a half reamer [ or spade etc.] --should I mill the reamer to exactly half or should it be oversized or undersized by a thou. or so.   HELP       ledball

Should be right at half.
I`ve alway found it`s best to make two when u make one just in case.

I've made them and I would say that they can be + - .005. Just a euducated guess, though. I've always just dialed off 1/2 the dia and cut it. Rough cut first, of course.

Bears,
A half ream is a round shape of what ever diameter you want (It can be tapered like a chamber reamer) that is then cut in half length wise to make a single flute reamer. They will cut in both directions. They are usually made of drill rod.

Oh, ok, and may i ASK WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF USING A HALF REAMER VERSUS USING A REGULAR CHAMBERING REAMER?

It costs MUCH less to make a half reamer than having one made if you have a lathe.

The half reamers I've seen had a full round pilot. I found these images on the net.
