Highwall Change From Coil To Leaf

If I were to change a coil spring highwall to a leaf spring; would all I need is the hammer, lever, leaf spring and barrel hanger?? If I were to replace a rimfire breechblock with a centerfire, would I need a different link?  Bob

!)  No, the flat spring receiver face is different to allow the mainspring to go through.  You can use the same receiver to go flat to coil, but not coil to flat.

2)  Depends on what caliber RF you are starting from.  If .22 rf, it's the same, if .32 or higher, the link may be different... so to might be the firing pin location.

More info needed.

Thanks Froggie,  I was thinking of picking up a .22 highwall as I have a coilspring center fire breechblock and a leaf spring hammer and lever and converting it all to centerfire with the leafspring system.  I wanted to do it that way because I've heard the coilsprings are harder to work with.  I could just leave it in the coil spring configuration and put in my centerfire breechblock.  Will the standard .22 link work for a center fire? How quickly can one change a firing pin in the field during a shoot with the coilspring system?  Have I confused you yet? Smiley

OK Old-Win, I do need further clarification.  Are you planning on switching back and forth between rf & cf, or are you talking about replacing a broken firing pin?  If so, you can drop the breech block assembly and easily replace the firing pin, whether flat or coil spring, rim- or center fire.  The coil spring action requires a little more dexterity to reassemble, but the upside is that the spring is much more durable.

If you have a take-down high-wall with two different barrels in different calibers, the easy way to do this is to have a block and lever assembly (including hammer) for rf and a second one in cf.  Meanwhile, if you just want to change back and forth between rf and cf on one barrel, I have to ask, "Why?"  FWIW, a long-time project I have is to make a multi-barreled set based on my orphan high-wall take-down action.  I have .32-40 and 45-70 barrels fit to it now (just drop block and change extractors) and hope to eventually fit a .22 lr barrel if and when I finish some other projects  Roll Eyes  I already have all the parts for a second, rim fire, breech block and lever assembly.

Does this ramble cover your initial question?  Roll Eyes

Actually the slick way to shoot centerfire and rimfire is the way that Pope did it. He built a lever-block pin on an eccentric. It is pictured in Ray Smith's book on page 156. Here is the dimensions, Slotted head .373" diameter X .235" deep, Main body pin .280" diameter X .685" long, top of pin diameter .192" X .330" deep, Distance from center of shoulder to center of body pin is .047".

Thanks guys.  I think you've pretty well covered my questions.  I would not be converting back and forth.  I would just be converting a .22 coilspring to a centerfire rifle.  If coil springs can be worked on as easily as a leafspring, it shouldn't be an issue.  I have over the years, accumulated a bunch of parts that would allow me to convert it to a leafspring if that were a better way to go.
