Hi Tex,

Good topic. I've used the Acraglas for many years as well as Clear Ultra Marine Epoxy for gun stock repairs and I believe in and rely on these products. Brownells has a pigmenting kit that comes in little cosmetic bottles which is all the pigment you will need for this life. Then there are the little plastic capsules of black and brown that also will last the average guy many a moon if not years if you don't loose them! The brown and the black is all I have ever used. I start by mixing up my batch of epoxy then put down a small dot of black as well as brown, mix those to a dark brown then mix the pigment into the epoxy. If it looks right it's ready to apply.

I kind of liked the idea of mixing walnut sawdust into the epoxy for color but imagine you'd better have very fine sawdust so it doesn't interfere with the bond.

Acraglas is workable or pliable for about 12 plus hours, after that it is hard to brittle.

I have often heated the epoxy mixture with a torch, under a light bulb or even in the micro for under 10 seconds to hurry things up, however, if you bubble the epoxy it will be a weaker bond.

But a good Acraglas bond is stronger than the wood it is bonding! So make sure you setup and alignment is right.  Wink

I think sanding dust is what you want rather than sawdust.  At least thats what I've been using for years after I saw the Bishop stockmakers using it years ago.

As someone else mentioned,  always remember it will dry darker than it looks while in the liquid state.  So I always go slow in coming to the color and stop a little short.

    Hi Gang:

The idea of staining Acraglas is a timely subject for me.  As we speak, I am repairing a stock that has the barrel channel cut too wide for the barrel.  For this remedy, I will use Acraglas with the brown dye that is included in the package.

For attaching ebony tips to  stocks I have found that a 2 part epoxy tinted with a touch of Rit liquid black dye works well to hide the joint.

Now for the sticky part of the story! I have found that the Rit will not work with all epoxies or Acraglas.  The epoxy turned int o  sticky mess that would not cure.  The Rit with the Acragls would not mix into an even colour.

The moral of the story, is to experiment with the dye/adhesive combination BEFORE attempting to make a bond!

One last comment, the liquid dyes that Woodcrafters sells did not work  with either the polyester resins or epoxies with which I attempted to make wood joints.  It may have been alcohol based.

     I hope that this helps.
