Mad Mike

I am convinced that I have confused some.  I am left handed and as a result re-stock for convenience to me.  I will put the rifle back together with the original butt-stock and forearm and take some more pictures with it assembled the way it was when I got it.  The original butt stock and forearm are shown as loose items.  I just assumed two and two would be put together.  Bad assumption on my part.

Saw the pictures of the 417. Wouldn't have a spare butlplate and/or sling swivels?

I probably have as many Stevens as anyone here but do not consider myself an expert buy any means. Case color looks right to me. Stock finish looks a little on the shiney side but could be correct. The more I learn about the Stevens guns, the less I think I actualy know.

Ditto to that.  That 417 came home as a basketcase.  The stock was pitiful.  Seems like it did have a sling swivel as I recall with a siding stop on the forearm.  I will look and see what I can come up with.  It needed to be restocked period, "Right or Left".

After 1920 when Savage took over Stevens, production of both the Ideal Rifle (44 Action) and the 414 were continued until about 1932.  I have an Ideal in 22LR in about 95% condition that was made during that time period and it shows the later style case color, the same as in your 414.  I also have a pre-WWI Model 47 (44 1/2 Action) that was originally ordered with fancy checkered wood.  It was returned to Stevens after 1920 and fitted with a heavy round 22LR barrel.  At the same time, a new matching forearm was fitted and the receiver was re-case colored in the later style. The barrel was numbered to the receiver and has the later style Stevens stamp used after 1920.  Since the 414 was made both before and after 1920, it is reasonably safe to assume that they will be found with both the later "pack hardened" color used by Savage and the cynaide process used by Stevens prior to WWI.

I also have a very mint 414 with the original rear sight ( sorry can not post pictures, too computer dumb & no camera) that I got a couple of years ago from Gary Quinlan. Since I also am left handed, if your left handed stocks do not go with your 414 when it sell, let me know, I might be interested. Any other left handed stocks for sale ? Thanx

Smoke, I am not looking for anything in particular. It's just that my radar goes up whenever "Left Hand" shows up. Would still be interested in seeing what you might put up for sale.

Smoke,
On second thought, I am looking for a lefthand stock and matching fore end for a BSA Martini 12/15.

For those intrested, I made a "Boo-Boo".  I decided to remove the shiney finish in favor of a simple oil finish.  Bad decision. As it turns out the shiney finish was the original. The Stevens factory had put some kind of filler on the two pieces of wood to try and match the color.  As it turns out the color of the two pieces of wood is completely different, the forearm is much darker than the stock.  I decided to make a new forearm  out of a piece of Walnut much lighter so they would match as close as possible.  The pictures show the new forearm at this point but is not finished  yet but willl give the idea of what I have in mind.
Yes, from a collector point of view yada yada yada.  But who wants two totally different pieces of walnut on a rifle?

Color's not that bad, put a coat of wax on it or rub some Tru-Oil in it, depending on how much shine you want. I like it. I would just wax it. assuming you used no more than 0000 steel wool to dull it.       Good luck,,,,,       ...MIKE...
