trapdoor front sight blade removal

I need to replace the front sight on a trapdoor. It shoots about a foot high at  100 yds with the lowest rear sight setting. I have done this before and had several that were real buggers to remove, but this one has gotten the best of me so far. Part of the problem is I am having a tough time seeing the pin. I think I know where it is but its not real distinct. Have broken three punches and decided to see if anybody has any ideas I havent tried yet before I try again. Thanks, Joe S

If you move your target out to 40 rods (220 yards) distance, you should be good with the existing front sight just the way it is.  Final elevation should be taken up by the use of the rear sight.

If, however, you don't ever shoot at the greater distance, keep the existing front sight base, but install (silver solder) a taller front blade in order to lower the P.O.I.

They drift out just hard to move. Get a Binocular magnifier one that fits like a hat so you can see what you are doing. Memory fails on which way but it's the same direction as the barrel band pins. Left to right ? you are probably punching the wrong way. Someone on this board will know for sure.

I put a 1903 front blade on mine keeping the original in case I sell later.  Use a notebook with actual elevations for distances recorded in yards on the sight and dial caliper measurement for the final base zero.

I think the correct movement to remove the pin is left to right, thats what I have been doing.  As a final last resort I will place the replacement blade along the front sight block to use as  a guide and drill the pin out.  Would like to avoid that if possible. Thanks! Joe s

I have been thinking about soldering a small brass rod to the top of the sight blade. Would soft solder be strong enough?  If I try to silver solder it, would the heat be hot enough to remove the sight block or result in scale on the inside of the barrel? Thanks, Joe S

I had the same problem with a M 1905 Smith & Wesson target revolver. It would not zero and given it's collector value did not want to alter the gun.

I took some copper flashing  cut it to sight size filled it in with a piece of plastic same width as the front sight and wrapped over the front sight. Glued it either side of the original blade with super glue. Sort of like a clothes pin works.  Objective was temporary but it's stayed on and done it's job for several years now, it's hardly any wider than the original
