I guarantee you that you are damaging your bore with steel wool. Assuming there are any sharp corners on the lands, the wool will round them and over time performance will be degraded. With stainless in particular 1-2 times is sufficient.

I agree that 0000 steel wool rounds the corners of the lands Tim. I'll add that anything pushed through the barrel will dull the lands. The question is, how much? 0000 steel wool wont remove the blue on a barrel.

I've borescoped rifles that have been scrubbed with 0000 steel wool quite a bit when I was using Darr lube.  Those barrels look just the same as my newer rifles that have never had SW in them. And they shoot just as good as the day they were made.  Probably better.

Boy did I start something. The chrome moli barrels that most are making are heat treated to 28-32 on the Rockwell "C" scale. Most are stress relieved after the button is pushed through but not at a high enough temp to take the hardness out. This hardness is harder than the steel wool. The 50 BMG has a stelite chamber and the first couple inches of the bore on most, no stainless. I was not aware of any stainless machine gun barrel, most are way harder than commercial barrels. Some of the 300 series stainless is much harder but will work harden even more making them unsafe. The 416 stainless machines very nice, maybe that's why they use it.
In 1895 Winchester came out with their nickel steel barrel for the new smokeless powder 30-30 and 32 special. The barrel for the BP cartridges was not very hard compared to the new steel. Marlin barrel were marked "special smokeless steel". Mauser barrels were even harder.

Way I see it use methods that get the bore clean, Less aggressive is best. Sometimes old abused rifles need aggressive methods to get old crud out. Once they are clean stay away from abrasives.  If your bore continues to lead fix the source of leading.
