Maynard rifles

I picked up a model 1873 Maynard at a gun show not to long ago and I am not able to find much written info on these guns. I have DeHass's book along with a copy of Geo Lyman's book. Does anybody know of other books about Maynards? Is there a collectors group?

My rifle needs a stirrup which I have located a repro. from S&S Firearms. A chamber cast is next then some Brass. The gun is solid, with dark rifling.

Cornell Publications has about a dozen print references specifically for Maynard rifles; you might find something there.

The only book I have found devoted strictly to the Maynard is that small paperback by George Layman.  It has a lot of info helpful to the beginner but quickly becomes frustrating for what it does not have.  There are two collectors working on books but no word yet on when they will actually be available, if ever.  Undecided

There is at least a little bit available in each one of the series of books on the single shot by Grant.  In addition, you will be able to find Maynard articles in such magazines as "Black Powder Cartridge News."  Also, I wrote a brief article for the SSR Journal a couple of years ago that is probably still available from our archives.

BTW, when you want to shoot that Maynard with its unique thick rim cartridges, you can make very good substitutes for most of the original calibers by taking modern cases of the proper dimensions otherwise and adding rings made by John Bly who sometimes posts on these forum pages... perhaps he will chime in here.  Repair and replacement parts (reproduction as well as a few original) are available from a few specialty sources including Mr. Bly and a company making reproductions of the Civil War vintage percussion Maynards, Romano Rifle Company run by Larry Romano.

Feel free to contact me by PM if you need more details.

The Grant books all have something about Maynards.  In the unique format that Grant used, there are small sections in each book about some Maynards, and one book of the series has a more extensive history of the company and rifles.  If I think of it, I'll check to see which one has the most info.
The Roberts/Waters book "the Breechloading Single Shot Match Rifle"  I believe also has a Maynard chapter.

Larry Romano (google 1882 Maynard or Romano Rifles) also makes reproductions of the 1882 Maynard which is very simular and used the same parts as your 1873 model. John Bly is known as Mr. Maynard by many who know him. Larry is very personalble and will try to answer any question you have.

There have been one or two articles in Am. Rifleman about the Maynard, too.  Can't lay hands on any at the moment, but if I run across one I'll post the date of the issue.
