Which way does one drift a rear sight from an 1885 as viewed from the real while looking down on the fifle?

                                                                               TIA,

In the industry, traditionally the barrel top female dovetails for retaining sights were tapered to match the taper found on the sight male dovetail.

For purposes of installing or removing a dove tailed sight, (not adjusting one for windage), when one is viewing the barrel from the breech end and looking towards the muzzel end, the sight's male dovetail is inserted into the barrel top female dovetail from the right hand side of the barrel and drifted to towards the left in order to install the sight.  Conversely, the sight is drifted towards the right hand side of the barrel in order to remove it from the right.

I can remember it as "from the breech, read in, read out".
