Stevens 44 or Tip up

I have the opportunity to get into this part of the shooting sports with either a Stevens 44 or Stevens Tip Up.  Both are in .32-40.  The Stevens 44 is going to be about $100 more than the Tip Up.  Both have been refinished at some point and have brand new walnut stocks and forearms.  I would certainly like some "experienced" advice before I commit to one or the other.  Please advise.

Thanks in advance!

aimlowsqueeze,

Do you happen to know the model # of the Stevens Tip Up?

If restocked/refinished both are screwed as collectors items and at the same time aren't worth much as shooters as they are  weak actions and easily overstressed if loaded with smokeless.  If cost is an issue, used CPA/Shuttleworth Stevens turn up from time to time on GunBroker and elsewhere--these are strong replicas of the Stevens 44 1/2 action which was designed for smokeless powder.  Otherwise look for a rebarreled or original Stevens 44 1/2 or High Wall Winchester.
Enjoy,
Leon

No, I don't know the model number of the Tip Up.  It is just being sold as a "Stevens Tip up.  Thank you for your help.

There are many good reliable rifles out there. A collectable rifle doesn't make it a shooter sometimes you cannot beacuse of value.  If the action is tight on either rifle then its moot. As to what you might expect from a rifle that old, ya get what ya pay for. Myself I would lean toward the tip up. Tipups are asthetically/artistically pleasing to me and in centerfire usefull. So its in taste. Does your taste got towards clunky? Does you taste go towards streamlined? The caliber is good and neither is a "match" rifle so its just what your eyes like as well as safe. What the heck buy them both you'll be happier... Don  rustyrelx

thanks guys...I am weighing all the information that has been provided and will be making a decision.  I am drawn to the Tip Up and really don't know why.  It is just something about the looks
