Stevens 44 1/2 disassembly

Trying to take my 44 1/2 in .38-55 apart to replace the firing pin. I have never had to take one apart before. According to De Hass, you remove the finger lever pin and the entire breech block assembley should drop out of the bottom of the action. It will not come out. Looks like the link is hitting the lower tang and will not clear. I keep thinking I have missed something obvious. Played with it a couple of times and no dice. HELP!

Slumlord44,
The lever must be in the up position as the block starts to clear so that the link will pass through the lower tang.

Prety sure I tried that. For some reason it didn't work. You have to drop the lever so the  bottom of the breach bolck tilts to clear the frame. Raised the lever after the breach block cleared and no dice. I know this is simple but I am apparently not seeing the trees for the forrest. Hate it when that happens.

If I remember right I think you have to push the lever up and forward so the plunger that holds the lever closed toggles to the up position and then the block will slide out.
Harder to explain than to do once you figure it out.  Wink

You are correct. Hard to explain in words, but simple when you figure it out. Have to push prety hard and it snaps over center into position. Went to install new firing pin and would not go all the way into the hole. Finaly figured out that when the old pin broke it mangled the hole where the pin comes through the face of the block. A little careful filing with a small round file and it works fine. Had to lenghten the slot in the pin that the retaining pin goes through so that the pin retracted far enough. Cut a piece of coil spring from a ball point pen and used it as a firing pin retractor. Don't know how long it will hold up but works fine. Hopefuly will keep pin from breaking in the future. Gun goes bang when you pull the triger now. I have some more fitting to do on the front globe sight and then need to sight it in and see how well it shoots. Interesting project. Thanks for the assistance!

Glad I could help, Slumlord44.
The first time I tried to take the block out of one of my 44 1/2 rifles I did the same thing you did, I read the instructions in the de Haas book and expected the block to fall right out.
Took quite a bit of head scratchin' to figure it out.
Take care,

Steve
