Hi all,
I am getting ready to put my 5th and final custom Martini together. I still have 1 at the stock makers and I am gathering parts for my .218 Bee. Anyone have a custom Martini they would like to share, or maybe a picture or two of some great Martini customs of the past??? Thanks in advance and God bless.  cordell

The attached picture is one of my older Martini projects. Just posted it to get the ball rolling. It was made by John Mitchell of the Classic Rifle Company. John was nice enough to step away from his classic Sharps rifles long enough to build this for me. TC&GB...cordell

From what you've displayed here, I would like to suggest that you are a skilled rifle builder.  That being said, why would you choose to stop at your 5th project rifle ?     Smiley

creedmoormatch,
Please accept my apology for implying that I built this Martini, my only part in this project was acquiring the pieces. The stock blank came from Ron Griffey (sp?) in Maryland, the barrel (with Metford rifling) was custom made by a barrel maker (I am drawing a blank on his name) in Pennsylvania. The action came from an individual in PA who salted away several decent actions back in the 60's and I was fortunate enough to talk him out of one etc etc.  John Mitchell gets the credit for this rifle and IMHO is a master craftsman going outside his field of expertise (which are beautiful Sharps rifles) to creat this piece. As far as this 5th Martini being my last project rifle, good grief I hope not Wink!!! I just meant it would be my last Martini! I have several other projects that I want to tackle, one is an extra barrel (.22 mag) for my Stevens, and I am waiting for a 9X57 Mauser that is just begging to be re-done and put back into the field. It sports a full rib, light engraving, double set triggers, 3 leaf rear sight and badly in need of a stock and re-blue! Sorry I missled you. Take care and God bless. cordell

  Good evening Cordell ;

Thanks very much for providing me with the additional information concerning your very interesting and attractive rifle.

I live in the Gettysburg area of Pennsylvania and know Mr. Ron Griffey in Maryland.  Although, you didn't mention the barrel maker in PA who did the barrel on your rifle, I am going to guess it was Bobby Hoyt, a close friend who lives in Fairfield (same county as my residence)  As a matter of fact, I was at Bobby's shop this afternoon picking up a barrel.

Do you shoot competitively in the Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania area ?  There is quite a bit of interest in single shot rifles in this area and of course, CPA Rifles in located in PA as well.

Thanks again Cordell, it was nice talking with you.

Hello CMM,
Yes it was Bobby Hoyt who made my barrel, I was having a senior moment earlier and his name would not come to mind! As far as competitive shooting goes I am just a paper puncher who loves to reload and cast a few boolits Wink. I have a special place in my heart for most single shot rifles and a particular fondness for the old 45-70 Gov cartridge. I am also attracted to big bore stuff but am getting a bit tender at my age so I tend to download to compensate for the recoil........ Shocked............. What are you building with the barrel you picked up today??? Take care and God bless...cordell <><

  Good morning Cordell ;

I have really enjoyed the rifle images that you provided for us to see.  I have mostly narrowed down my collection in favor of the J. Stevens S.S. brand, either original rifles or the very fine CPA copy.  One of the aspects which I appreciate most about the Stevens S.S. rifles is the take down barrel arrangement.

What I had at Bobby's was a M-44 barrel that had marginal rifling that I tried to nurse along for accurracy, but reached a point when it was apparent the bore was fine for plinking, but needed attention for accuracy reasons.  Bobby installed a liner in it for me, but I haven't had time yet to take it to the range for testing.  Hunting season is starting up and I will be away for awhile with that activity.

I hope you have a great Labor Day holiday,    Smiley

Hello CMM,
Here are a few pictures of my Steven's 44, I have posted these in the past but thought you might enjoy them.  Many years ago (40+) I hunted pheasants in your beautiful state and still talk about it to this day! We are located in Chatham Virginia and the soil in this area just won't sustain pheasant. We do however have a modest quail population but most farmers in the area will go out of their way to leave the quail alone. I am told that 50 years ago birds were everywhere but farming has all but removed the feed and cover the birds need to exist. We have 2 or 3 coveys here at the farm but nothing like what we would like. Have a great holiday and God bless you and yours. cordell <><

I thought this was for pictures of Martinis?
Here is one that was customied by Alfred Parker---later to become Parker-Hale. It is a BSA model 12 set up for target shooting and dates to when there were a lot of provincial 200yd ranges in the UK.

Wow! some beautiful rifles, thank you for posting them.

Fred you are absolutely right, I did get off the beaten path there for a moment or two. Here are a few pictures of a 2 barrel set that Bob Snapp did the 45-70 barrel on. Ed I also collect knives who did the one pictured??? Take care and God bless. cordell

I suppose I should add one.  This is an in progress work.  I stil need to send it out for checkering and then find a windage adjustable Number 8 rear sight.

Martini's do not need bridge timbers for fore-stocks.

Vic Samuel's did the stock work on this I. Hollis small Martini Henry in 218 Mashburn Bee.

Douglas:  Sweet!  I may have just the #8 sight you need.

Cordell:  I made the knife, and the stock.  The blade was given to me and is made by Green River Works.  It feels good, and can really slice tomatoes thinly.

Here is another martini in .222.  I need to reshape the forend tip, but otherwise find it quite nice.

Very nice rifles DoubleD and EdBu. I agree wholeheartedly about the forend size. Way too many customized martinis have absurdly large and ugly forends. The British model for single shot forends is hard to improve upon.

I am not 100% happy with the forend, it too square, but much better than it was.

This was what I was looking for.

The other thing that people don't know how to do is the end of the lever ends.  It is hard to improve on the barrel end found on English guns.

ziplocjoe, D.D. and Ed,
ziplocjoe, you have a very nice collection of Martini's there, I know they have to be a joy at the range. Thanks for sharing them with us!!!

D.D. you have already seen most of my Martini's on your board. As a matter of fact most of what I have gathered on the MH has been thanks to your input. I love the Hollis and can't wait to see it after it has been checkered!!! P.S. Love the wood!!!!

Ed, great rifle in one of my favorite calibers, you did a fantastic job on the stock!!! Back in the 60's and early 70's I tried my hand at making knives, but quickly realized that you had to love sneezing buffing compound, and the only ones making a profit back then were the big kids (Moran, Loveless, Randall, Henry etc). You did a great job on yours and it certainly compliments your rifle....

As far as forends go, I like the forend on my Muscat Martini, and if I could all mine would be this small Wink...........Take care and God bless....cordell

Its hard to say. For sure the metal work was done by Braendlin, but I don;t know if the wood was done by them, Bradell or a third party like Thomas Turner.

Here's another Martini that is in the "project" stage. It's chambered in .303 and ready for some file work and a blue job. The stock was just completed and it will be the next one off to have the metal work done. The trigger at one point had a safety but all that remains is the shell so this will be ground off and the trigger re-shaped. The rear sight will also come off and a 3 leaf express sight will take it's place. My 450 Rigby Match Martini will be ready in a few weeks, it is currently at the stock makers who is waiting for the lever latch mechanism to be repaired. The little spring nipple that holds the lever tight was just a bit short and needed to be lengthened. Take care and god bless.....cordell

Hi Cordell. The Greener is 45-70.  I got the bare action over 30 year from olde John Grant, rest his soul.  The action had never had a barrel in it. It is beautifully engraved with georgeous case colors. After John passed away I figured it should finally be made into a rifle. First round was a Gemmer plains style. Nice. but just not right. Went back and made more the English style and it's great. The barrel is a Badger 18 twist. It is a shooter. I think I have some pix of the bare action. I'll see if I can tag them onn here. The picture of the rifle is lousy. Guess I'd better take some better. Anyhow, thanks.

Trapdoor:

There's a finished rifle with engraving similar (but not as nicely done as yours) on Steve Cobb's web site.  Take a look at it at:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I've considered it several times but my tastes run to small frame Martinis and I don't like the sights the builder or first owner chose, useful as they might be for target shooting.

Hi Cordell, I like your Martini Mannlicher. Is that a standard 303 Brit. case just necked down to 7mm as you say its chambered for a 303 but the photo says 7mm.
This photo shows my BSA Martini (cannot remember which model it is but its a thick wall) in 7mm Waters. Its not a very good photo as it doesn't show very well the octagon barrel or the fancy work the gun smith did on the rear sight or the grooves cut for fitting a scope.
Now that I have had one of my cataracts done I can see to shoot with open sights and l like carrying the rifle like this as it only weighs five and a half pounds according to my bathroom scales.
It likes Sierra 140 and 150 grain boat tails and with a 3-9 Zeiss on for anything over a hundred yards it will shoot into moa and I do not notice the recoil.

Tried to add another photo to my last post but gave up as too difficult. As well as doing a little cosmetic surgery to the frame it doesn't come amiss to slim down the trigger guard.

Hello Cordell
John Saunders company Century Arms did the work about twenty years ago, I don't know who for, I visited John early this year in Melbourne and got a little bit more of their history. The barrels are twenty two inches and they were made by a french company I don't know their name, most of the furniture sights etc John used to Import himself or get made as he needed them, the case is rolled with a crocodile pattern on cow hide, the white stuff is Ivory, the workmanship and finish is of a Best Gun Standard. The set was split up and sold separately, the two rifles and the case, I got one rifle and the case at an auction and after a bit of hunting I found the other one in Brisbane, the owner had come into some hard times and was happy to part with it and the set was complete again. I do shoot them on the odd occasion but as rule they stay at home and just look pretty.

Hello Trevor,
This is what I would like my GP TD to look like when all is said and done. We have a master cabinet maker in our area and if and when I finish he said he would be interested in building a case for my 12 Ga X 45-70 Martini set.

If and when you dig that beautiful set out again I would love to see some close ups of the action, stock, and open and closed case...... Thanks again for sharing and God bless you and yours.....cordell

OOP'S attached is a picture of my newest acquisition. It is a Steven's Bisley that has been converted to 218 Bee (unfortunately). I will add more on this when I receive it!! ...cordell

Cordell:

If you decide you don't like the .218 Bee, drop me a line.  It's my favorite medium range varmint cartridge and I just love it in a Martini.  I have owned four, two standard Bees and two Mashburn Bees (one of which was a .20, long before the .20s took off as a factory cartridge) and have one of each right now.  Fun cartridge and cheap to reload and shoot.

This is my ugly duckling. It is a work in progress. Built by a benchrest guy in Ohio who is gone now by the name of Orlin Gilkerson. Its purpos was to shoot varmints from his truck. Barrel is Hart  17 1/2" with a tight chamber 222 R. Dot on target is 3/4"  shot at 200 yds. This is a very eficient tool.

Here is a picture of my Peabody Martini with the new 40 cal Bresien barrel fitted up to the action with the Parsons scope setting on top, we are trying to figure out the right barrel length for this long scope, then the barrel will be profiled half octagon/round. New stock is about completed.

David, it's kinda like what came first , the chicken or the egg. The Peabody Martini patent predates the other Martini patents.

Would Peabody Martini Patent be an oxymoron.

The Peabody if it was patented would predate the Martini patent  The Martini was for a modification of the Peabody design. Was the Peabody design patented?

Now the Peabody Martini was a Martini design made by Peabody for the Turks and later commercial sale.

But then the Westley Richards patent predated the Martini patent by 40 days That violated some how or another the WR patent and Martini and RSAF paid a royalty to WR for the life of the manufacure  of  British Military MH.

and finaly the Von Martini patent a year later. Others were working on this same idea and Fruend held patents that were for a center hung hammer martini and a hamerles martini early on.

it doesn't really matter as tilting block rifles had been around ong before either Peabody or Martini. There was even a capping breechloader carbine, used in the American civil war.

But what were they patenting?  Martini's patent was for the coil spring striker system in the hinged block.

I believe the two Peabody patent pictured are one for locking-unlocking method and the other for a hammer actuated firing pin.

I don't think either gentleman was patenting the rear rotating hinged block it self.

I just picked up this BSA Model 12 with a Fecker scope, last shot at Camp Perry before the crash of 29, and the original owners medals from Perry. But the best thing is the barrel, it is a heavy barrel by Arthur Hubalek. Can't wait to shoot it.

Thought you might like to see this if you hadn't seen a naked Mk3 BSA International Martini before.
Sanded the woodwork down and a couple of coats of boiled Linseed oil applied so far, next job to polish the metal work and get it re-blued.

I hope mine fits here. It is a BSA Martini11 International. It was built by Karl Kenyon. It is just incredibly accurate rifle. It feels like it has a 2oz trigger like my BR rifles.

Thought you guys in a colder climate would like to be cheered up by looking at my bougainvillea and new BSA 22rf.
Was a standard target rifle and has an excellent trigger.
Barrel cut down to 18" and threaded for a silencer. By not saying a sound moderator I suppose I am showing my age.
Note the machining on the action which doesn't show up very well in this photo.
The trigger guard has also been reshaped but does not show in this side on photo.
Scope is a Burris 8x32 Signature.
Still got a bit of work left to do on the stock, just boiled linseed oil. The wood shows different colours from various angles and this photograph does not do it justice.
Regards.

O.K. everyone the "last Martini" is back with new barrel and stock. It still needs work but I think you will get the general idea of what it is going to look like.

I originally started out to build a small bore and as you know all things change in one form or another. This Martini was built on a Bonehill action that had been completely re-done and is tight as a drum. I had a 1/2 oct 1/2 round barrel added to that in 45-90 Win..... and a fairly nice piece of walnut tacked on as well. I can't get the fugure to come out on the left side of the stock for some reason??? It has the same fiddleback as the right side but the sun just didn't hit it right sorry.....I also don't have any overall pictures yet but will post them when I get them. This is still a work in progress and needs some additional lever work, blueing, and sights. There may also be some case coloring in the future also.

I have also just made a liar out of myself about this being the last Martini!!!!!!!! I picked up a little .303 basket case that I am going to work on soon............. I have the sickness!!!!!!!!! Take care and God bless. cordell

That is a very nice rifle, excellent work, Hope you have some method of protecting the Schnabel. I tend to chip even conservative ones. That one looks very graceful but very fragile. Maybe an insert would help, just don't know.

Hi Cordell. Do you remember I mentioned that I had originally stocked the Greener in a Gemmer/Plains rifle configuration? I dug out a couple pictures of it this was. If you go back to the more "conventional" pictures, you can see the difference. Any favorites as to which one you guys like best?  Should I have left it this was? 'course, it's only a couple of screws and the forend wedge to change it back. Wink I never throw anything away.

OK Cordell, I give. Which one are you calling the wedge? This latest picture with what I call the "Gemmer/Plains" rifle or the earlier ones with the recoil boot on it?  These latest pix style is great offhand, but the butt plate hurts off the bench. The other doesn't hurt off the bench. With the recoil boot, it's like shooting a loud .22.

Anyhow, latest projects are two more complete Gemmer/Hawkens, one going to Illinois and the other Missouri. Past these, I keep looking at my project wall, the barreled actions I have on hand and what stock wood, waiting to see what "jumps" together in my head. I've got a couple of ideas rolling around that head, but nothing solid yet. Thanks for asking.

Hello trapdoordick,
Sorry to have thrown you off there. I like both rifles and so I just commented on the fact that I liked the fact that your forend was attached with a wedge instead of screwed on! I think it just adds to any single shot. And as a matter of fact I have a set of sights and wedge I am thinking about using on an upcoming project!

Again my correspondance skills have deteriorated since I retired 21 years ago................sorry..... Take care and God bless. cordell

See how slow I've gotten Cordell? I did think you were talking about the forend shape and not the fact that a wedge holds in together. The wedge was a leftover of the plains rifle configuration. So, now we both understand how olde critters communicate. Wink

I'd like to thank all who took the time to post their favorite martini's. Makes me want to run out to the garage and pull the shotgun bbl off my greener and have someone fit a 50-70 bbl on it. Been messing with smith & wessons lately and some of them are downright expensive. There I said it, let the flames begin. The 50-70 should make a great pig rifle. With all the flooding here in louisiana one sherrif said it was legal to shoot any hog they see, except the ones with the horns. Frank

Hello Singleshotlover,
Is your Greener a take down? If not you could still make that rascal look good, and in 50/70 Gov it will turn some heads! I loaded for, and shot the 50/70 for many years and then a fellow made me an offer on my Sharps that I could not refuse (I am sorry now!!)..... Good luck on your project should you choose to do so. I am posting another picture of my Bob Snapp take down 45/70 with the original 12 gauge barrel. It will probably get a new forend in the near future the one on it now is the original!!

Dick,
I think between the 2 options it would fall into the chocolate and vanilla category. Each person would have a different perspective. Both are attractive and ready to use, let's get a poll from the rest of this thread!!!! How about some input guys!!! Take care and God bless....cordell

Cordell, its a solid frame police gun. The bbl is pitted both outside and inside. The receiver though is in pretty good shape. Had been giving some thoughts about the project but since money is tight most likely will be awhile. Thanks for the pics, Frank

Dick,
Did you build the trapdoor in your Avatar? I just took a picture of it and blew it up....What a beauty!!!!!..... We serve the same Master, I see he is already walking with you!!! Take care and God bless you and yours. Rick (aka cordell)

Frank,

The old 14 gauge police guns make a great action for a custom single shot. Now you have me thinking about that 50-70 and how much brass and bullets I lready have..........hmmmmmmmmmm maybe I will make one also!! Good luck when and if you start and if I can be of any assistance please drop me a P.M. Take care and God bless. Rick (aka cordell)

Hey Cordell (Rick), yes, I did build that one along with a "few" more  Roll Eyes. Thanks and I'm glad you get some enjoyment from it. I have been indeed blessed and thankful for the ability. Give me a PM and I'll share some more if you'd like. Blessing my friend and to all the "guys" on this great forum.

Rock, every time I see one of the member's gunsmithed (by them) I am truly amazed at the quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Yours are no exception. And thanks to all whom who have taken the time to post pics of their martini's. Frank

Try this one - a BP LR match rifle built on a Westley Richards/Francotte ZAR receiver.  Chambered for the Brit #2 Musket cartridge.

The wood is done, now the steel needs to be finished.  And no, I didn't do the stock:  A friend made it according to my indications, and it then got a professional checkering/finish.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

It will see 1st match use early next month in Germany...

Here is a picture of my 218 Bee with a 6x Unertl scope. It is a very accurate little rifle and has a safety installed on the back of the trigger guard.

This martini is in 17 Ackley Bee caliber. It also has a safety on the triggerguard but a different type. It has a 15x Super Targetspot on it.

Here is a picture of my newest project. I have to get the French Gray done and then install a barrel but it all takes time. I really like Martini's and have been shooting them since the early 60's.

Is this the same scene by the same engraver as Dale53s ballard? I handled that rifle when it was first built and it was a fine piece of work.
Dale are you still around on this forum?

Yes I think it is the same scene. It was originally on some of the Peabody Martini's and that is where I first saw it. I have been planning on doing this for quite a while. Here is the other side.

Don't think so.  It would have a stapler in the scene if it was!    Grin

Hello all,
Just wanted to see if we could still add to this site and it looks like we can!
I have picked up a few more Martini's and as soon as the snow and sleet stop I will get a few pictures on here for your approval. I hope everyone is still well and more importantly, STILL WITH US!!!! Let's get this site started again I think in the last 2 years (almost) somebody had to buy or finish a Martini!!! Take care and God bless. cordell <><

You guys are giving me the bug!  I will probably have a few BSA's coming in from the UK in a few months, along with some vintage double guns.  I'll let you know when I'm ready to put them up on the auction sites.  They should mostly be unmodified .22rf target models.

Saw one of the Greener take downs and I also have one that needs a good 12ga shotgun barrel. What are the chances I could find an original ?
