Would Peabody Martini Patent be an oxymoron.

The Peabody if it was patented would predate the Martini patent  The Martini was for a modification of the Peabody design. Was the Peabody design patented?

Now the Peabody Martini was a Martini design made by Peabody for the Turks and later commercial sale.

But then the Westley Richards patent predated the Martini patent by 40 days That violated some how or another the WR patent and Martini and RSAF paid a royalty to WR for the life of the manufacure  of  British Military MH.

Well, here is a copy of the Peabody patent, the first one dated 1862. Von Martinis patent was later, much.

and finaly the Von Martini patent a year later. Others were working on this same idea and Fruend held patents that were for a center hung hammer martini and a hamerles martini early on.

it doesn't really matter as tilting block rifles had been around ong before either Peabody or Martini. There was even a capping breechloader carbine, used in the American civil war.

But what were they patenting?  Martini's patent was for the coil spring striker system in the hinged block.

I believe the two Peabody patent pictured are one for locking-unlocking method and the other for a hammer actuated firing pin.

I don't think either gentleman was patenting the rear rotating hinged block it self.

I just picked up this BSA Model 12 with a Fecker scope, last shot at Camp Perry before the crash of 29, and the original owners medals from Perry. But the best thing is the barrel, it is a heavy barrel by Arthur Hubalek. Can't wait to shoot it.

Thought you might like to see this if you hadn't seen a naked Mk3 BSA International Martini before.
Sanded the woodwork down and a couple of coats of boiled Linseed oil applied so far, next job to polish the metal work and get it re-blued.
