Guys, tell me about the Zischang rust blue process.  Is it appropriate for a Low wall built up in Winchester special sporting configuration ?

This for my Low Wall project rifle

Boats,

I don't have the process but I can tell you already it will be appropriate for that low-wall.  Just remember you then have to bring it to a CSV match to show it off!   Wink

The Zischang rust blue formula that I know is simply Aqua-Regia  (mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid), distilled water and some Iron filings added and allowed to dissolve.

Should work fine.

Several recipes call for nails, I would caution against modern nails, many are zinc plated, zinc will be dissolved by the aqua-regia, but may cause problems with the final blue.  Degreased steel wool works nicely.

Boats.

the basic formula for rust blue given in Roy Dunlap's book "Gunsmithing" is as follows.
Nitric acid                4 oz
Hydrochloric acid     3 oz
Iron (clean nails)     1/2 lb
Water (distilled)       1 quart

Mix acids outdoors then add nails. after the nails have dissolved add the water. If stored in a dark place solution will keep almost indefinitely.

I have used Pilkingtons (sp) American Rust blue from Brownells with great success. However when I used the last of it I ordered Brownells house brand and it works as well at a much reduced price.
