Help, please. Identifying A Single Shot Rifle

Long story short...

I have a single shot rifle that I am trying to sell.  I've owned the rifle personally for a decade or so, but never fired it.  Prior to that it sat in my parent's gun cabinet and hadn't been fired for at least 5 to 10 years before that.

I know very little about this rifle other than what various gunsmiths have told me when I took it to them.  They say it was rebarreled into .222 Remington probably in the1950s or 60s.

The question is the receiver/action.  Some guessed it was a Remington or Winchester, recently another smith and a collector told me it was a Stevens.  Based on what they told me I listed it on an gun auction website as a Stevens 44.5.

Over ten people are following the auction, and one or two have stated their doubts as to whether or not it was/is a Stevens 44.5.

Could you folks help a pro-2A, pro-CHL, pro-NRA guy out with this rifle so that I can be as honest as possible with the future buyer?

I'll post some pics and would be happy to add more or answer any question that I can about the rifle.  If I can't measure it, or photograph it to answer you question, you're guess is as good as mine.

The scope is a Lyman Jr. Targetspot 8x, with clear glass, and visible crosshairs, and both screw-on lens covers.

The rifle is supposedly rechambered in .222 with a bull barrel.  The tang has the following stamped/marked (not etched) into it  441/2  11 901.

It was made/re-barreled in the Latrobe/Ligonier PA area where my parents acquired it, AFAIK.

Any help greatly appreciated.  Single shot rifles aren't really my cup of tea, but it looks like you folks have a nice forum here.

What you have is a Stevens Model 44 1/2 and a very nice one from the pictures.

There others on the forum that can probably pin down the production date based on the serial number.

OTV,

2nd Gary's call saying it's a Stevens 44 1/2. Also appears that it has/had the kicking extractor (ejector) judging by the screw in the receiver that passes through the action in front of the breech-block mortise.

Pretty high number for a 44 1/2.  Probably toward the end of the line.  1915 or 1916?

From the collectors' POV, it is too bad it has been rebarreled.  But other than that, it looks to be a honey.  Typical 1950s varminter conversion.  The hot blue turned the lever that red color.  If it were mine, it would get shot a lot.

Would you be good enough to tell us which gun auction the rifle is presently appearing on, and of course, the item or auction reference number in order to locate it.

This is not one of those ventures where you'll send me a check with a request that I pay your back taxes and send the balance to you ex-wife as back alimony, .   .   .   .who lives in Nairobi, Kenya ; is it ?

I'd be happy to send you the auction via PM.  I came here looking for some input and ID help, and you all have been very kind and most helpful.  I didn't want to be the bad forum guest that pops in to try to sell something and runs for the hills.

I'd like to thank you for all the help this forum's members have been.  Your knowledge has helped me, and I greatly appreciate it.

I found it at Gunbroker.com as auction No. 184704573 .  You guys will enjoy his attitude as express to the various people who have asked questions about what they are bidding on.

I am checking the rifle serial number.

Yeah..there were two guys that were giving me the 3rd degree about it.

My responses aren't my proudest moment, sorry for some of the tone in them, but I was at wit's end.

"It looks like a modern reproduction with an old scope slapped on"
"Its a 44, not a 441/2..."
"If its not marked why are you selling it as a Stevens..."
"Who re-made the rifle?"
"Your price is too high..."  (It might be, but I had no idea what it was worth, plus I always though BIN prices were always too high.)
....

All this in less than 24 hours after my first 'additional information' post detail.

One Time, don't let the jerks get you down!  You've got a nice rifle that I wish I could afford to bid on...  Best of luck!

If you would like to make a donation the person to contact is our Treasurer Richard Eesley, 1168 Banbury Circle, Naperville, IL 60540. If I might suggest why not turn the donation into a membership. For that contact Keith Foster, 15770 RD 1037, Oakwood, OH  45873.

I would also recomend a membership. The bi-monthly magazine is worth it and this website is more than worth it. It is the reasion I joined. It is always a good idea to support the orginizations that support your hobbies and interests.
