1/4 Bore Squib Loading

Does anyone have a good squib load for the 25-20 S.S. that they would care to pass around ?

Winter is coming, as it always does, and this time of year is when I start to make plans, including plans for shooting indoors with squib/light loads.

The J. Stevens folks ( in 1905 ) offered a 67 Gr. and a 77 Gr. bullet for the 25-20 S.S., but I've not seem one of the molds which cast those light weight bullets.

Any recommendations bounding around for the loading of .25 Cal squibs ?

I am away from home right now but Sharpe's Complete Guide to Handloading has Lot's of squib loads. Will look this weekend. My 32/40 125 gr fixed bullet squib load came from Sharpe's  He called it "good for killing hogs"

Way I just loaded squibs for the 35 Remington was look at all the old manuals.  Figure the parameters for Unique. Then at the range with a Bonanza fixed rotor powder measure loaded with Unique and the Lee Nutcracker hand tool loaded cartridges 5 at a time. Went up  through the Bonanza's rotors until they "cracked" or Supersonic. Then back down to just sub sonic.  That seems to be the best velocity for Squib loads,  sub sonic like a standard velocity .22 Rimfire.

Hope to see you at Conestoga

How about that little Lyman mould No. 257-435 at 51 Grs. weight ?  I'll bet a dollar to a donut that Westerner has that in his catch-all room, in one of those drawers, and never shoots it.  It looks more like a pistol bullet, but hey, it's worth a try at 25 yards.

What powder would I use ? Well let's see, Unique in a low dose, say 2.5 Grs to 3.25 Grs would be my guess.

Anybody have some advice to add that will get me pointed in the right direction ?

Or, if all else fails, .   .   .I have a 257" Lyman mould for the Loverin style bullet which I had shooting fairly well and which I could sacrifice to be reduced in length incrementally until I arrived at the right weight Squib bullet .

As a matter of fact, that mould has a gas check base, so hey, why not mill that bottom of the mould off, and through the process of elimination, I will arrive at a 55 to 60 Gr squib bullet.

Creedmore I happened into a light bullet mold 32 for Squibs 125 grs, I usually use a 200 and 170's are about as light as you ever see.  However regular weight bullets do fine downloaded with pistol powders and used as Squibs.

Way they tell if it fits the rule at Conestoga is the sound, cracks it's not a squib no crack sub sonic OK

For my 25/20ss, I machined off the gas check on the Lyman 257420 mold. That gives me a bullet that's .259 dia and .500 lg. It weights 59gr in 22/1 (smaller and heavier in 40/1). My std load is 5.0gr Unique but, for the squib I'd use 3.0gr BSed, for about 1000+

Frank,    I like the way you think.  The Lyman #257-420 cut down and 3.0 Grains of Unique, .   .   .   , outstanding !

I believe I'm going to follow you on that .

CMM, have you looked at the little round nose bullets/moulds designed for the .25 ACP?  No good for outdoors, but should make a dandy squib load sorta like the "collar button" .45-70s.  Just a wild hair...

Froggie, I'll have to give that a "look see", I reckon there would be enough there to breech seat.

Blind Eye, If paper wouldn't work I could always put it in a greased linen patch and muzzle load the little bugger, don't you think ?

Creedmore,

At Conestoga  or the other Gallery Clubs I never see anybody breechseat. It may be against club rules not sure. However given the indoor range moving gear on and off the firing line to accommodate shooters and fact they cut the lights off during the relay it would be pretty hard to do.

I run my squibs fixed

For the 25 ACP mold, you only need to open the base band up to about .260/.261 so it will cast a .259 base band for BSing.
