Boats Low Wall Project Rifle

Posted several times about my Low Wall project rifle. Well I got it back in the mail today, just like I sent it off 2 years ago   Nice action 1888 Polished with all parts complete, and a fitted Stock set. No Barrel.

Now wondering what to do, send it to another gunsmith or give the job up.

Boats,

Hope they didn't try to charge you a storage fee. Any reason given for their not having done the work?

That part is best left unsaid it was beyond the gunsmiths control.  Problem at hand is starting from scratch.

Anybody have a good recommendation for a Gunsmith that can install a pre-contoured Green Mt Rimfire barrel ?

   Hi Boats :

Will you be coming up to Thurmont on the 20th of this month for the Chris match ?

Will it wait that long, or is it on a fast track and things need to get settled sooner than that ?

Boats,

Send it to John Taylor who posts here, (johntaylormachine.com) he will do it well, charge fairly, and probably get to it without a 2 year wait.

Or, send it to John King in Kila Mt, he will do it well, charge fairly, and may have a long wait, depending.  Call him and he will at least tell you how long it will be.

Keith at wyoming armory in Cody can do a good job, don't know about his time or charges.  I do know he can do a very good job.

Spent a few days in Cody 2-weeks ago, which included picking up a Ballard No. 2 from Keith Kilby at Wyoming Armory. My brother and I probably spent 3-4 hours over two days in the Wyoming Armory shop purchasing the Ballard and discussing rebuilding (new barrel, engraving of the receiver and conversion to .22LR) my 1885 Win Low Wall. Will be sending Keith the rifle as soon as I make a decision on the wood configuration. Keith can do pretty much anything you want in the Wyoming Armory shop. We had an excellent tour of the facility, which includes the tools to do most all metal work, bone charcoal color and bluing, wood work from mild to wild, etc. Give a call.

Also have been talking to DZ Arms concerning the project and Dan Zimmerman can also do anything you want on your Low Wall.

Have also spoken with CPA Rifles, but they were reticent to take on a Low Wall project at the moment due in-house projects.

Thanks,

CPA is my gunsmith been dealing with them since 93, they set the standard for running like a business.  However as you say they handle there own rifles only, Probably the reason they do it well.

Will get in touch with Wyoming.  I am putting together some pictures of what I have and outline of what I want.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I'd just chime in on using John Taylor, and for all the above listed reasons. He's always done great work for me.

Thanks guys but it's already on the way to John Taylor

Hope to show you a photo of a finished rifle next spring.  John's part won't take that long but few more things to do before it's photo ready.
