Well I spoke to them this week in hopes of an easy fix to some Farquharison parts I am in need of and was disappointed to find out that they purchased all of the Storey action castings EXCEPT the farkey stuff. If anyone knows where that stuff ended up I would be interested.

That is a great looking casting set! Looks like it wont take a bunch of metal removal to get it to working state.

Sorry, your right all the flat parts are water cut.  They loook good,  the water cut is at a bit of an angle but that is easily corrected.

I believe so.  The water cut parts are 1018.  I plan on casehardening the parts.  Should be good fun.

Rex, I will assume you have a machine shop or at least the equipment to do some fairly heavy and precise metal machining. I say this because turning those flat chucks of breechblock flat stock into a working breechblock will be a feat of machining. One note of caution if I may, when you start hogging out the interior of that BB halves, and especially because they are 1018 CRS they are going to warp and if not prepared for it they will be ruined before you know it. I have never had this kit before but I have much machining experience and that is what is talking here. Good Luck on your project.
I have spoken with Rodney on the phone and am impressed with his knowledge and work experience. He is just a year younger than I and also retired. We come from very similar work experience. I have built a number of single shots of my own design over the years, most from bar stock, however I have built a couple using cast receivers. If there is one suggestion I can make for any would be builder using a cast action is to establish your zero, zero, zero, start location earlier. Usually that point should be the center of the bore and located at the front face of the BB mortise. Then everything is measured from that point as the project proceeds.
By the way I liked Rodney enough that I bought 2 of his kits, the Wesley Richards 1897 and the Fields Patent rifle. Maybe this winter I will work on them.
Again GL on your project

Thanks for the advice.  I have a fairly decent machine shop and have built a number of rifles but never one from castings.  However, I have used Rodney's castings for individual parts before and they turned out great.  Good luck with your projects.  I have a bunch of stuff to get done before I can get going on this ballard but hopefully later this winter I can get at it.

Greg, I'm still working on best loads but it shoots pretty well.  I made it for a match we have each year for .40 cal and up with iron sights and fixed ammunition.  One of the matches is best 10 of 13 shots at 300 yards and it's always done well at that match - usually 97 or 98 with a couple of X's.
