Need a Ballard Gunsmith

Print Post
A former client sent me an email asking if I can fix his Ballard. I have been retired for years and don't do gunsmithing anymore. Who  is a good Ballard Gunsmith I can refer him to.  Here's his email.

Quote:
BTW, know anyone who can fix an old Ballard?  It was shot with .410 shot shells, and it loosened the action. I'm told it can be fixed by bushing the joints, but it's beyond my skill.

Any suggestion who I can tell him to contact?

The 'guys in Cody' these days are Keith Kilby and Steve Garbe at Wyoming Armory. I just bought a very nice Freeland reworked Ballard No. 2 from them two weeks ago and they can do all things Ballard. Keith will be restoring my 1885 Low Wall this winter. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Dan Casey is also in Cody and is Rocky Mountain Cartridge
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).
All three were with Ballard Rifle & Cartridge at some point when it was located in Cody.

Seems strange that shooting 410 would loosen it up, they only have about 13,000 psi. That's about the same as shooting a 44-40. I had one in a while back that was loose from ware. toggle link and screws had a lot of slop. Made new screws and a toggle link and it worked fine.
I got lucky and a customer traded a real nice early Marlin Ballard action in on his bill a while back and another customer gave me a good butt stock. I have a pattern barrel so will most likely make it a 38-55. It is a forged action so it should be OK. Just need to have another customer send me a forend and sights.

No need to "bush the joints" when new pins and perhaps a new link are indicated, as Mr. Taylor has done on others.

John Taylor is an experienced gunsmith who knows S.S. Rifles, including Ballards.  FWIW, .   .   .May I suggest that you request his services and see if he will accept the project.    Smiley

I have sent him on his way to the Ballard guys.  He is not a gunsmith and said what he thinks needs done.  I am sure the professionals will advise him properly.
