Hello!  I am a new member here.  By way of introduction, I just got back into shooting rimfire rifles about a year and a half ago.  I have several .22 single shot target rifles that I enjoy shooting and working on. I have a friend that I just purchased a Stevens Junior Model 11 for.  He collects old boys rifles and I thought he might enjoy this one.  I took it to the range today for test firing.  The first thing that happened is that in pulling back the hammer it refused to lock in position without pushing the trigger forward with my trigger finger.  I used standard velocity SK long rifle ammunition.  The first two shots were fired and except for the cocking problem it seemed to function normally.  I loaded and fired the third shot.  After ignition the spent .22 brass flew out of the chamber and bounced off of my forehead.  I cased the rifle and brought it home.  Is there a source that someone here could guide me to that might give me some insight as to what I need to do to correct the problems this little rifle has?  I am leaving in ten days to drive 1300 hundred miles to visit my friend and I was hoping to be able to take this rifle with me and give it to him as a present.  Thanks for any assistance you might offer.  Bob

The #11 and #14 1/2 are almost the same with some parts being interchangeable. The hammer mainspring hooks to the bottom of the breach block with a little sliding part that keep the spring strait. You may have a faulty hammer or breach block if it came open when firing. The hammer locks the breach closed when in the down position. The trigger spring may need to be replaced , it is a small coil spring with a plunger. Or maybe the plunger is sticking. The breach block also has a small coil spring and plunger that works the extractor.
I just got done working on a 14 1/2, had a tough time finding a hammer spring. You should stay away from high velocity ammo with this little rifle.

Mr John Taylor is a gun smith who most of us know and who is very knowledgeable in the area of single shot rifles and a fine craftsman.  Your trip in ten days would be a really short amount of time in which to have your gun repaired and made safe.

Would it be possible for you to either take the rifle on the trip in order to show it to the intended recipient, and then ship it to Mr. Taylor's shop for repairs, etc. and ask John to ship it, once fully repaired and functional, directly to the person you intend to receive it as a gift ?

Just a suggestion which may work into your plans.    Smiley

Had similar problem with 14 1/2. Replacet the coil spring with a heavier one. Searched till  I found one that was close and had to play with it to get the length  and tension right. My recomendation is standard velocity shorts in these. Spring is about the only thing that holds the action shut. My vote on John Taylor if you need someone to work on it.

Thanks for the information everybody.  I need to take the rifle apart today and see if there is any repair I can make myself or if I will need parts and professional help.  Bob

Success!  Thanks to all your input, I was able to take the rifle apart.  I determined the trigger spring was out of position.  Return said spring to proper position and cocking and trigger problem solved!  Everything works as it should now.  Thanks again!  Bob

    Glad everything worked out for you and your rifle is back to where it should be.

I can only send it back to the person that sends it to me. Otherwise you get into doing a transfer of ownership which requires it to go through a dealer in the new owners home state.
