Ruger #1 rear peep sight

Is there a peep sight that is made, or could be adapted, that would fit the 'rail' on the Ruger #1's?  Perhaps a rear sight that would be click-adjustable that could be put into a 'dovetail adapter' (which would mount to the rail.

Putting a rear sight on the tang is problematic with the location of the safety.

I've worked on Ruger No. 1 rifles with tang sights.  They did require a special safety knob, and the base of the sight was relieved in the center to allow the safety to slide under it...the safety had checkered knobs on either side of the sight base.

Tim- for your guns with the factory rib get a piece of bar stock and a spare set of rings. Cut the rings off at the bottom of the round part and screw/solder/weld to the bar stock, which extends back over the action and mount a Redfield target sight to it.

Both ideas are tempting.

I'm sitting here with a sight base in hand and I have a Redfield International rear sight with Merrrit disk.

Then too, I don't use safeties - the action is open:safe or closed: ready tofire.

I think the deciding point will be that I'm working with more than one rifle - can only shoot one at a time and will have a scope on it for load development, iron for the matches.

THANKS!

Many years ago a gunsmith made me an adapter to hold a rear sight on a Ruger bolt gun. The rear scope ring was cut flat, a piece of angle iron (?aluminum) with the leg cut off was screwed to the scope block, the leg had holes drilled and the sight was screwed to this. It came on and off easy, was simple, and did the job. BTW, I have a sight that would work, a new Lyman 66RH.

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but these gents manufacture a Ruger #1 peep sight...
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
And yes, mounting a tang sight and doing away with the safety would also be my option for a target rifle.

I didn't mention the NECG sight because it's an emergency hunting sight with almost no range of adjustment.  Nicely machined and though out, just not a piece of target equipment.

Right now I'm leaning towards taking a piece of round stock, milling a flat on the bottom and milling a 1/2" groove in it to fit over the rib.  Then a pin going down into the half-moon slot on the top of the rib to control axial movement and some arrangement of pins/setscrews to hook to the quarter-moon notches on the side to locate and hold from moving L-R and up-down.  Lots of options.

I have three #1 tropicals.  Two I use for .40cal & over because I can use iron sights, the other is in .375H&H and will also be used for cast bullet shooting, but with a scope.
The two I'm setting up are in .458WM and .405Win.  If I have a detachable iron sight and a scope, I can compete with iron and develop loads with the scope.
So, I'm looking to set them up with peep sights front and rear.
If the .405 works out (accuracy) I'll use it next year for prarie dog hunting too.

Hi Tim, a/k/a/ "Chief of Smoke"

It was nice seeing you at the shoot this past weekend in Gretna, Virginia, and had I known of your interest in mounting iron sights on your Ruger No. 1 I would have shown you a dandy set up that I use.

My Ruger No. 1 has Steve Earle scope blocks for mounting a Redfield #3200 scope.  For iron sights, I purchased an adapter from CPA/Shuttle worth that fits the rear scope block once the scope is removed.  With the adapter in place ( it extends out over the action and rear tang ) I then mount an Anschutz peep sight to the adapter and have elevation and windage adjustment .

If you look at the CPA web sight you will find the sight adapter there.  It was originally intended for the CPA/Stevens 44 1/2, but also works well for the Ruger No.1.

Hope to see you again at Thurmont, Maryland in August for the schuetzen match.

    Tim,

I also wanted to mention that on my .25 Cal Ruger No.1, which is dedicated to target shooting exclusively, the shot gun style tang safety has been eliminated, and I am working with a Pennsylvania gun sight manufacturer in order to obtain a base with which to mount a flip up vernier sight.

Here's a start, prototype piece in aluminum to show the concept.  Rod is 1" diameter.

Tim- Use the same attachment concept but make it out of 1/2" by 1" flat stock extended back over the receiver. Then mount a Redfield Olympic or International or Anschutz to the left side.

Anschutz sight will mount on top and require a front sight that will do double duty as the tail on a 747.   Grin  I use a PNW sight that I got from Brownells on my Ruger No. 3 with an adapter base that fits a Unertl block.
