I know you guys probably don't like the metric's on here but I thought I would ask anyway. Where do I get a blank to fill the slot (is that the correct name for it?)  where I took the rear sight off. It is a good bit larger than 3/8th. Thanks for any help.

Steve,

Assuming you have the original sight then measure the size of the dovetail and also ascertain what angle the dovetail is. It could be commonly either 45 or 60 degrees but may, on foreign rifles, be different.

A gunsmith supplies company like Brownells will probably be able to sell you what you need, or perhaps Steve Earl. Anyone handy with a milling machine should be able to make you a one off in short order.

The standard slot blank width for most American rifles, such as a Winchester, is ⅜ inch; however some are larger, as I recall Remington slots are much larger. Brownell’s sells a nice reproduction of an old Winchester slot blank which is about ⅜”;

If you look in the back of James J. Grant’s first book he has many of the slot sizes listed.

I measured the rear sight that came out of it and it measured .609 which I believe puts it just shy of 5/8th's. It has the piece I measured that fits in the dovetail and the rear sight lays in it and is secured with a screw at the front about 1.5 inches from the dovetail. I can try to make one using my old mill that my next door neighbor now has.

Actually, Bob, that slot blank is based on ones that I used at the gun shop I worked at before moving to Iowa and working for Brownells...it started out as a broken open rear sight, with the shank end filed to match the forward end.  When I worked at the B company, I made up one as a "prototype", the new products group liked it and approved it, and they are now having them made from bar stock.  No, I don't get any royalties from them...I was "on staff" and was expected to come up with new products.

David,

I appreciate your nice slot blank, even if “B” doesn’t, I bought one for a Winchester of mine and it fits well and it looks good too. Good job Dave!

Thank you, Bob.  The whole idea was to have something that looked classy, rather than plain vanilla.   Grin
