repairing a Lyman 103 tang sight

I am trying to fix an old Lyman tang sight. Turning the windage adjustment screw clockwise moves the sight correctly to the right. But when I turn the screw counter-clockwise it comes unscrewed instead of moving the sight back to the left.

Anyone know a fix, or have a diagram of the workings so I can figure out what's happening?

Thanks

merhere,

Without a picture of your 103 sight, I'll have to guess, but can you take a look at the left side of the sight where the small end of the windage screw protrudes through to confirm that the windage screw retaining washer and lock nut are in place?

I'll take pictures this evening and post them. But, the screw doesn't protrude. It just barely reaches the other side of the sight.

I suggest that you contact JD Steele as he was the whiz at troubleshooting the Lyman 103. No longer posts on this forum but you might reach him at Treeblood1(at)aol.com
I hope you get that 103 working, they are a great sight!

BP;
You nailed it! I looked in the gun case and found a lock nut about the size of a gnats you know what. It has sheared off. I'm surprised I found it. I bet it will be tough to find a replacement screw set. I'll probably set the windage for the range and leave it be.

Here's a picture: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I 'll try to contact JD Steele. Maybe he'll have the parts I need.

Thank you both.

Is this what it looks like? Could be the screw is broken and the nut missing. This one is on the way for me to make repairs

OK, I was to slow and you got your picture up first. I might be able to make a new screw for you.

John,

Your pic looks like a Lyman #47 style, maybe a repro.

It does say NO. 47 in the letter that came with the picture. I need to make a new knurled screw for it.

John, that would be great. I have the lock nut if that helps. I'll PM you.

I don't know what model Lyman it is. Lyman is stamped on it, but I don't see a model number anywhere. My great aunt used the gun on her high school rifle team around 1920. The sight was on it then.
