Which Rolling Block for 22 RF

I think I would like to build a rolling block as a strictly benchrest gun. It seems to me you would disturb the gun less during loading without the lever. BUT, I don't know a thing about rolling blocks!
I have read there are different sizes? Which is the best rolling block action to use? Do any of them have enough umph to seat a round into a match chamber? Is this a bad idea?

In general, I don't think a rolling block is the right action for a benchrest .22.  However, I had a liner for mine that shoots right up there with a dedicated match stevens 44 I also own.   I somehow misplaced my liner, might have left it at the range.  I need to make another.

One problem with the rolling block, as you discern is that it doesn't readily seat a bullet into a match chamber.  Your thumb gets tired of pushing them in.

The hammer fall is also a bit more energetic than a .22 needs.  That jars the rifle.  It's hard to get the trigger under about 12 ounces and still be safe.

Other than that, any of the rolling blocks will work.  I would use a full size #1 for a bench rest gun.  A #2 would also work, but a #4 might be a bit light.

You don't see a lot of roolers made up as bench guns, but I remember shooting with a gentleman that shot one in 32-40 that did very well. If I was going to make up one I would use one of the later large frame rollers that was made to take the smokeless Mauser case.

Guys, the title says we're looking at a suggestion for a .22 rimfire rifle...the hammer fall is going to have more force than the recoil with a No. 1 or No. 5 action!  In this situation, I think that I would look at the No. 2 action...more beef than the little No. 4 and lighter than the No. 1.  Even though it only came with plain triggers, a good smith can work it down to a moderately light pull...if you insist on going with the Remington action.  Personally, I have not felt at a disadvantage with an underlever action on the bench.  Possibly if I had a rifle with a large, ornate, Schuetzen lever I might, but with a standard lever, it usually a non-problem.

The hammer on a full size rolling block can be lightened up a lot to get quicker lock time and eliminate a lot of the " bounce". My thought would be to not move the firing pin but put the barrel off center, chamber at 6 o'clock. Might be a little fun making the extractor. This could be a nice bench gun, full size.

I have a frame that someone cut down the top octagon and went a little to far. I was thinking it would be plenty strong enough for the 32-20 but now with the idea of making a 22LR, sounds exciting.

John, if you raise the bore line to put the firing pin at 6 o'clock, and make an extractor that goes past the chamber to the right, it would give a bit more support to the rim on firing.  This might work best with one of the sliding bar extractor versions...

sounds like a plan, now to see if I have a big enough 22 barrel in the shop. Hate to buy a new barrel. May need to take an old barrel and line it to 22LR. This would be a good place to use an old cracked hammer that's in the RB box, It wouldn't bother me to weld it up for a 22LR.

Well I dug out the action and all the parts I could find. Looks like I need a breach block. May as well make one from scratch and put the firing pin off center for the rim fire. I thought I had an old breach block with the ear missing that I could weld up and use but it was not in the parts box. I have some heavy walled tube and a bunch of 22LR rifle barrels so the plan is to take a 16" barrel and press it in to a longer tube of about 30" and octagon it. This will give a free bore of 14" but will give the rifle the feel of a large bore ( with very little recoil).
Thanks for the idea  Irascible.

John,

I'll send you a breech block with no pin hole drilled.  It saves a lot of the work over making one.  Wait a few days to start the project, I'll have it in the mail to you monday.

regards,
dave

Thanks Dave.
I may have a barrel for this project. It came off of a Ballard ( not original barrel) It is plenty heavy enough to make an octagon barrel but it is only 24" long. Bore looks very good. Only problem is that it is full of holes down the top where some one got carried away with scope mounts. It ether that or go back to the plan of using another barrel in a tube to get a longer barrel. I have a few Winchester 61 barrels that have a good bore, was thinking of using one that had been cut to 16.5". I remember reading a test report years ago where a 22 LR has it best velocity out of a 16" barrel. They started the test with a 28" barrel and kept cutting it off till the velocity changed. It staid very consistent till they got less than 16"

Interesting, I have read many articles which either said 19" or 20", but I never saw 16" mentioned. What ammo?

It's enough that I remember the test after 30 years. Have not got a clue as to what ammo was used.

Well the barrel is ready for threading. It's 28" long, about a #3.5 tapered octagon. Has 16" of rifled barrel and the rest is free bore at 5/8". As soon as the breach block is here and finished the barrel will be threaded and head spaced.

John,

I remember the 16" value as well, and your right, it was a long time ago.
