I am trying to replace the extractor on my trapdoor, done it quite a few times but this one is getting the best of me.  I cannot get the breechblock closed so that I can get the hinge pin installed. Anyone have any tricks for this job? Thanks! Joe S

From memory  and it was a year ago, I used a tapered pin to graduduly ease everthing in line while pushing down on the extractor with a home made pusher. Made out of a piece of delrin slotted to hold the extractor. It was also a 3 hand job. My wife pushed on the taper pin while I aligned the extractor

Gave me a fit, before that one last time I repaced one was  20 years ago so I am a 2 extractor expert.

Ice pick! A great idea. Will give it a try. After about an hour with lots of cussing and scraped knuckles, I put the old extractor spring  in. It extracts but does not eject, due to a smaller spring being used. Next time I have some time to kill I will give it a try. Thanks! Joe

Hi Joe. The guys are right about a taper pin of some sort. Doesn't have to be fancy. I normaly start it from the right side, put side pressure, toward the barrel, and leaving just enough room to start the hinge pin . Then use the hinge pin to push the taper pin out. You said it extracts only. Did I understand that you replaced the spring and guide rod with a smaller or shorter one?  Olde age and senility gets to me now and then. What did you replace it with? Got to keep these old TD's out there shooting.

I use a taper pin for lots of things keep one in my shooting box for CPA breechblock switches rim to center fire. It's the one that pushed my Trapdoor parts in line allowing the extractor to fit in.

Only complicated thing on a Trapdoor is the extractor is under spring pressure while aligning. that's the reason for holding it down with a 3rd hand and simple plastic tool slotted so it won't slip around.

Stay with it

Thanks everyone for your help. The rifle had a replacement  ejecotor spring when I got it. After dissassembly, it looks like the spring tip is a replacement also, but it works. The only problem is, rather than kicking the empty cases out and over your shoulder, it extracts the case and leaves it in the chamber so you have to remove it. Its not a bad feature in a way, because unless you are in a hurry it doesnt hurt anything and makes it easier to keep track of your emtpy brass in the woods. Being accustomed to the forcefull ejection of the regular extractor, I wanted to replace the spring so I bought an original  replacement spring, ejector and spring tip. Trouble is, the darn spring, which is an original, is so darn strong I cant get it installed. I have replaced breechblocks many times before and never had this much trouble. Usually what I do is force the breechblock to close and then apply a clamp to the ejector to bring it into alignment, but even that trick did not work here.
I will try the icepick next time I feel like takling it. In the meanwhile, I will simply get used to it the way it is, and might even decide to keep it that way. Joe

Joe, I have been putting these beautiful TD's together for over 50 years (HONEST, I'm that olde) and have seen some "stiff" springs, but nothing as you've described. Question re: the guide pin. how do I say this, simply, the guide pin should be shorter than the spring. I have also seen the thumb latch spring, which although appears the same is about .060 longer substituted for the extractor/ejector spring. Don't hold me to the exact mesurement until, if needed, I'll measure both,  and might create what you have decribed. Kinda. Wink But this is the only thing that comes to my feeble, senile mind these days  Smiley. If'n think of any other variables, holler. I'm still willing to learn something new.

Thanks Dick, I will check into the lenght of the spring. It might be that the one I bought is just too long to work. I have put dozens of breechbocks in myself and always been able to do it with a little trouble but not this much. will take a look at the dimensions and let you know what I come up with. Joe
