I have a question I can't seem to get a straight answer to. Can a Green Mountain barrel--what they call a Black Powder cartridge barrel be used for smokeless powder. I want to build a .22 hornet based on a Winchester high wall frame. The rifle will use commercial Hornet ammunition not hot reloads. The Green Mountain barrels seem to be made of 4140 Moly steel the same as many manufacturers use for smokeless. I have asked them directly and get "As to smokeless powder, we recommend black powder or black powder substitute. If the certified black powder substitute happens to be smokeless, then you may use it". Has anyone used a Green Mountian Barrel for smokless??
Thanks

I don't think you will have any problems using a GM barrel for 22 Hornet.
Some of the barrel companies are going with 28C for hardness instead of 32C as Douglas still uses, seems they would rather have a barrel bulge instead of split. I use quite a few GM barrels and have never had a problem with any.
One of the things to think about is bore size. The early Winchester model 70 used a .223 groove diameter and the later barrel use a .224. I have not had any trouble with the barrels but have had some that flow the primers back in around the firing pin, even with small firing pin diameter. This seems strange on a cartridge with 42,000 PSI. I'm wondering if factory loads are with pistol primers.

Thanks for the reply--GM only has a limited selection of barrels listed that use the Winchester contours for the classic octagon barrels. The one I will be using is listed as being a .22 magnum barrel ( under black powder barrels) it has a .224 x14 bore and twist.

As John T. commented, don't think you'll have any problems with a GM barrel...again the only problem is their limited offerings.  Another supplier that I've started using is McGowen Barrels.  Very user friendly
