Problem - Pedersoli Sharps Lever
Apr 12th, 2010 at 9:53am
Print Post
A friend just purchased a used Pedersoli Sharps and the lever seems to be defective. There is no cam for the extractor, the block drops to the lowest position so the rim of the case hits the edge of the receiver instead of coming smoothly out of the loading trough.  Is this typical of the Pedersoli guns? Anyone know where to get another lever?

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

The breach block makes the extractor work on a sharps, not the lever.

JT,

If you will look at the lever you will see a cam on the profile just forward of the pivot pin hole. The cam causes the block to rise to a position that puts the trough in the block at the same level as the receiver. Pulling the lever down hard gives the "snap" to the extractor.

I have seen some with a roller in the lever where it rides on the spring. Might be worth a try, $100 for a new lever seems a little high.

Wow, that is steep. I'm thinking this is a factory defect and hoping Pedersoli will make it right since it reflects on their quality control. Does anyone have contact info for the U.S. distributor?

A hundred dollars may seem high, but show me a gunsmith who would make one from scratch from bar stock for any less, and I'll show you someone who will go bust in the near future.  Grin

Blindeye,

I have compared the Pedersoli lever to two Shiloh and a C. Sharps, the Pedersoli lacks the caming surface seen on the others. BTW: My friend got the gun with a second spring, I imagine the original owner had the same problem ans someone told him to get a new spring.

Harry,

When they are investment cast by the hundred I am pretty sure they could be produced cheaper.

Several years ago I was working for an outfit that did 50 BMG bolt action single shot rifles. The frame was 13" long and the casting cost $25.
It's true if a gun smith was making one it would cost a bunch. But when they are mass produced the price is usually a bunch less.
The lever on your rifle could be built up with weld and shaped to work on the spring. It should be built up with a filler that is a little hard to prevent ware and drag on the spring. It also could be machined and a roller added.
I have three actions in the shop at this time, I should look at them to see what it would take. I know one does not have the cam and one is original percussion. The third one is new and may have the roller.
