FWIW I just got my Jan/Feb '10 copy of the ASSRA-J.  in it John has published a set of photos and notes from a batch of Donaldson/Rowland correspondence that were provided by John Dutcher.

on page 12,  the middle picture very clearly shows the type of bench rest used for their experimentation.  from this photo it is clear that the replica we have in the clubhouse at Etna Green is an accurate copy.

Now if only a detailed account of the "rowland group" would show up. Wink
