I just picked up a real sweet Stevens Ideal Range Model 45 in 32 cal.
This is a keeper and I plan on shooting it.  At one time it must of had a full length scope on it as that is the only reason I can think of for the extra dovetail cut in the rear of the barrel.

Very nice looking rifle, will be interesting to see how it does on paper.
Right you are on that rear dovetail.  Had picked up several myself thru the years and also wondered exactly what that rear dovetail was doing there, couldn't possibly be for a open rear sight.  Got to looking at the Colorado Collectors show the last couple of years and noticed that many of the earlier scopes did use such a dovetail for the rear ring mount.  To complete a very nice rifle I had that was missing all sights ( and showed no signs of ever having a tang mounted rear sight) but did have dovetails fully fore and aft I advertised and found a set of original Malcomb scope rings and a long #455 scope .  Everything fit up perfectly and all matched in age and condition.  Without telling, you would think it had been that way since factory.
Save your nickles and take your time.  A tiny bit of that original stuff is out there and will be worth the wait and expense to find it.
Am not an expert by any means but unless I miss my guess your front sight started out life as a Beach combination sight but somewhere along the line the protecting ring was removed along with the pin post and the post was replaced with a small piece of ivory which has yellowed nicely thru the years.
This would not be unusual as the old time target shooters were as bad or worse than todays trapshooters to try anything different or new.
Get some cases and try the old gal out, you might not win any match but will have a lot of fun.

Nice rifle. Which .32 is it? A Lyman 438 Field scope would be prety close to the time frame of this gun also. I put one on one of my 44's and it looks right and works well. A lot of the fun in these guns is finding the proper period accessories to make it right.

Well, I got a nice suprise, I have been busy and have not had a chance to really check her out real good, the auctioner said 32, gee I guess a real 32 to him would be called a 45-70. Anyway, it is a nice 25-25 witha 28 inch full octagon barrel, so it must have been special ordered. Under the forearm in Stevens script it says 25-25, then close to the rear of the barrel it is stamped 14, a a T. The receiver is marked 45 in the correct spot.  Oh, unless I'm seeing things it looks like there may be a glass lens in the aperture of the tang sight.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I was puzzled when I saw your first post on the caliber, as I couldn't think of what "32" the 45 would have been chanbered in. The .25-25 makes much more sense, and a very neat caliber too!
Will you be rebuilding the globe ring for the combination front sight, or just replacing the sight?

It could have been 32 Ideal, 32-40 or even the 32-20.  I believe all were made in this variation.

Neat caliber. Still looking for a .25-25 gun myself. Have .25-20 SS and .25-21.

Nice rifle, it appears to have screws rather than pins thru the breechblock. making it pre-1900. Another 32 caliber could have been the Stevens 32/35.   ledball
