I noted the round breach block of the Webley Farquharson Model 1902 32 40 SS Rifle, Auction # 148917397.  I wonder if that is where Frank de Haas got his idea for his Turret Breach single shot rifle.  They are all coming from a guy in Austin, MN, home of Hormel and my home town (in high school).

Austin MN is also home of the world famous Spam museum.  A must see.

Out of my price range also.  But there are not many bids.  Following this might allow us to put realistic values on our own accumulations.

Seems to me that the gun auctions are functioning very much like a stock market.  With all the caveats associated therein.

That said, this forum would seem an appropriate place to record actual sales.  Could we have a separate category where we posted links or descriptions of the rifles.  I don't think it necessary (or desirable) to include either seller or buyer names or locations, but accurate descriptions of the rifles and the actual sales amount would be helpful.  Does anybody else think this idea is worth pursuing?

Dave, I've been there!  My Grandfather is on the list of WWII vets that served while being a Hormel employee.  An unusually interesting museum, especially the material that had on the Hormel girls.

Sorry about the off topic dialogue.  Terry H.

I have perused the lot on several occasions now. Just to enjoy seeing everything he's selling. Anyone know why they're all going up for auction?

I was wondering why he was selling so many at one time as well.  I did see in his newsletter about a year ago that he and his wife wanted to do more traveling so maybe he's decided to reduce his numbers. I've been to his house twice and got to see some of his inventory.  The last time I was there, I was trying to buy a Zischang Borchardt action but discovered there was a crack in it.  Terry,  I'm going to have to take in the museum. My dad was a livestock buyer for Hormels during the war.  I guess he was considered an essential.  He sent a lotta hogs to Austin to keep those Spam cans filled. He did take my brother and I through part of the slaughter house once.  My mother thought we would be scarred for life but we were pretty impressed.  Sorry, LOT. Bob

Steve,

Those are some of Jim Gorgen's rifles.

Bob

The spelling is "Goergen".  Jim is a long time single shot collector and dealer, who has been on the scene since the 1970s if not longer.  He's had more mouth-watering, high-grades pass through his hands than most of us can ever imagine.   I'm a little surprised that he is running these guns through GunBroker rather than one of the big auction houses like James Julia or Rock Island, but I'm sure he has his reasons.

Either way, after seeing some of those rifles I want to update my "Dear Santa" letter.  After all, it worked for Ralphie, so maybe it will work for me  Grin

Those big auction houses get a 15% buyers premium and then they get 17% of the selling price from the seller. That is a pretty good reason not to sell thru these auction houses.

Julia's has been advertising no sellers premium on high quality guns.
