The Ruger Lyman Centenial Rifle comes in a case with Lyman dies, no provision for sights, comes with a full length Lyman target scope. $1500 is about a normal price for one in original box unfired.

That price of $1500 would be for the more common version in the green felt lined box. The rarer version with real engraving in the red lined box was only made in about 100 units, and they go a whole lot higher.
I sold mine (the more common variety) last year and it got $1450 on Auction Arms, so I'd guess they're around that price.

I had one in the Green Felt box. It shot good, BUT! the Scope was nearly useless. Not enough elavation to get on target at 200 yds. This with the Blocks that came on the rifle new. The Scope adjustments were very crude. A takeoff of the early Stevens system made much cruder. I did finally get it going with a Lyman 103 modified to fit in the Safety slot in the rear tang. Shot some very respectable targets. Lost interest and sold it in the case with all the stuff that came with it for
$1000.00 about ten years ago. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

DANG!!
I have been looking at one at Cabela's in Buda Texas. It is on consignment for $1,599.00.
(I ran an offer of $1,400.00, no reply yet.)
Not sure where to go now. You fellas don't seem too positive about them. What I like is the 28 inch barrel. Would probably put a 'real' scope or BP sights on it. Just wanted it as a 'fun gun' to go with many other 'fun guns.'
Any additional observations / opinions would be welcomed.

Hi Tom,
I just sold mine about two weeks ago for $ 1500. not new as I put about 500 rounds through it, but you could not tell, it still looked like new.

Shot it for about a year, scope is not up to today's standard but still could shoot about an 1.5 inch group with it using 405 Gr. bullets at 100 yds., it was a fun gun to shoot and I think it would do better with a better scope.

QUESTION:
Are the Ruger #1 Lyman drilled and tapped for conventional scope mounting?
How about vernier tang and glob front sights?

Thanks.

Answer(s):  Drilling and tapping is for that special long "traditional" scope, not for modern mounts.
No Ruger #1 that I am aware of is factory equipped for tang sights, the safety gets in the way.
Globe sights can be put on anything that is equipped for iron sights, of course, but I can't swear that there is any accommodation on that #1 for irons.

I take it that the 50th Anniversary would be a better choice for a collecable shooter?
Price wise, any observations opinions on the 50th Anniversary? Would $1,400.00 be too far out of line for a new in the box?

Go up and look at the price quotes and notes in about the third and fourth responses in this thread.  Your exact question has been answered, and if you add a bit for inflation, your price quote looks better still.

If I remember correctly the target bases were D&T at front sight location, so if you install a low base then a globe designed to slip on a target style base will work.
The rear base is in a bad location for a sight, so can't use one there.
You could D&T for a tang sight, but as Froggie mentioned the safety is there, so most shooters remove it, or build a base to straddle it, then put the tang sight on.

Yeah, I put the first bid of $600.00 on it. Grin  No, was not serious about it.
Just FYI. CABELA's sold a Ruger/Lyman recently for $1,100.00.
I have decided to 'go cheap' and purchase a 'pre-owned' 'pre-warning' Ruger #1 in .45-70 for MUCH MUCH less.

Another #1 question: Is there any difference in action strength between a "pre warning" #1 and current production? Can't see where there would be, but had to ask.
