.22 singleshots?

What is a decent and accurate .22 rimfire single shot that is suitable for a tang sight that wont cost a fortune?
It would be used for informal target shooting and plinking.

Small frame rimfire Martini rifles are still relatively inexpensive, and many will come with an appropriate set of sights.  See (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) for an example.

I'll second David's response. The BSA model 12 and 12/15 usually have a great rear target quality adjustable rear sight and a globe front sight. These rear sights are usually the #7 which are bothe elevation and windage adjustable. However there is a #8 which bears a good resembalance to a tang sight and is also windage and elevation adjustable. And they are known for their accuracy. I've two that I play around with from time to time and with the high prices of ammo and availability make a good to go target or plinking rifle. Frank

You might also look for a converted Ruger which can be found for reasonable money.

         If you want to use a tang sight the rifle that comes to mind is a 22RF Stevens 44.   leadball

The Martini is good. So is the Stevens 44. Decent shooters are available with both of these for reasonable prices.

So if I happen to stumble on a 12 or a 12/15 at a yard sale, which one is better (and why) and what would one in good condition run?

Recently, I bought a BSA 12/15 for my nephew, I mounted a Litschert scope on it (it came with iron sights) and took it out to the range to try it out, the gun has a perfect barrel and shoots better than any of my Ballards, to add insult to injury it likes cheep ammo! I went ahead and gave it to him, but it was very painful, Oh well.....

The 12/15 and the 15 have pistol grip stocks, others have a straight stock with the lever bent to form a pistol grip.  I took one of my 12/15 rifles and reworked the stock into a Schuetzen design, with a proper steel buttplate and with the original forend shortened.
