Effect of wind (Read 4672 times)

	I just read Randolph Wright's book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Schuetzen shooting. However, I do have a question for all the wind reading experts out there. On page 162 a chart depicts the manner in which wind affects shots, showing the placement of hits by wind from all directions. On page 212 the author shows a target in which the wind , blowing from left to right, then right to left, scattered his shots in a horizontal line. If the chart on page 162 is accurate, how come the shots on page 212 are not in the ten o'clock and four o'clock positions as predicted on the chart? The chart, by contrast, shows no hits at 1,2 or three o'clock and no hits at seven, eight and 9 o'clock. I get plenty of hits at two and three o'clock as well as 7,8 or 9 o'clock. What is the explanation? Thanks! Joe S

	(You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links) The chart gives you good info. The velocity of the wind will effect the amount of rise or fall, along with the horizontal. The chart shows what direction not the amount of vertical the bullet will travel.

	light will also affect what your bullet will do. the range i shot on for the most part, has quartering winds out of 11am and 1pm, and as the day goes on not only will the light have an affect but also the heat. some of my best groups have been shot as fast as i can get the shots off machine gun them once I have found a condition that is constant get with it. irish

	I understant that light, temperature and the nut behind the stock also affect bullet placement. However, according to the chart, the wind , no matter what direction it comes from NEVER puts a bullet in the upper left or lower right corner of the target. Thats the part that I do not understand. 	What I see is shots 2-3-4 mostly in the upper left corner. 7-8-9 in the lower right corner. My chart is for a right hand twist barrel. Joe.

	Joe, the chart gives two views. The outer part shows wind direction looking down at the earth. The circle with bullet holes shows a target as you would look at it when shooting. What it doesnt tell you is the effect of the rotating bullet. The bullet will climb the wind. A wind from right to left will cause the bullet (RH TWIST) to be pushed left and the bullet will climb up. That didnt come out right. The chart tells you the effects of rotation, but not in text. 	Don't worry too much about the gaps in the chart; the real wind will fill them in.
