Hope this is the right place for this .It's not exactly gunsmithing.
I've been trying to get my old trapdoor to shoot a good group, without much success. I've discovered I have a pretty good buildup of what must be carbon, just ahead of the chamber. I've been using
my Ed's Red on it and it hasn't helped much. I'm thinking of getting some KG-1 from Midway I've never used any of this stuff before. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff.
                                                     Thanks  Gene

Best Advice I can give on Trapdoors is get Wolf's "Loading Cartridges for Origional Trapdoors:.  It's the best.  He gives a lot of advice on getting the bores clean as well as loads.

Several I have worked with needed aggressive methods to get junk out of the bore.  JB cleaner on a tight patch thats wraped around a 45 cal brush.  Have even steel wooled spots.

I have been using the new Hoppes Elite bore cleaner. Water based non toxic, no smell. It is advertised as an agent that will break the bonds between carbon atoms and allow them to be removed from the surface of metal.

2 wet wipes followed by a few brush strokes. I love the stuff and it really works. Smiley

Among the best compounds for carbon would be IOSSO. Use it with the afore mentioned patch wrapped brush method.

0000 steel wool wrapped around a worn brush does the trick. Steel wool is soft enough not to harm barrel steel.

With the use of a bore scope I have found solvents only clean the fouling and metal build up but they never touch the carbon build up in front of the chamber. Then I was introduced to the JBs paste and found it was the only cleaner that would remove this carbon build up.

The gray JBs is good for cleaning up the carbon build up after you have used your metal and fouling removal solvents. The red JBs is great for polishing up newly manufactured barrels.

I haven't tried it but how about using some automotive spray carbon cleaner/removal?  I know it's available but don't remember the brand name.  Doesn't carburetor cleaner remove carbon?  Spray some on a patch.

Carb cleaner would work but it also removes the finish on your stock plus anodized parts and can thin some bluing out as well.

Shooter's Choice Black Powder Cleaning Gel is used by a friend on a .17 Remington- says it is the best he has found for carbon fouling.

It most certainly will.

Try iosso bore cleaner.comes in a tube like toothpaste. Get a borebrush and wrap with large patch and apply a good amount on the patch. stroke it back and forth through the throat and then the rest of the bbl. I have also used rem40x bore cleaner to do the same thing. Just don't get the rem 40x into a trigger mechanism as it will cause excessive wear. I like to use it when fooling around with old mil surp rifles. Many of which have not been cleaned in a long time. It will remove slight rust in the barrrel, and generally just about anything else. I bought a brand new M48BO yugo mauser and the junk in that barrel was something else. Dried grease, dirt, and stuff like that. Afew trips down and back did the trick. Stuff turns black so you know its working.Frank

My greatest success has been with a product called "KREEN", a product made by KANO LABS, the same company that makes KROIL which is used be so many people for cleaning applications these days.

I'll tell you all again, "try KREEN".  It's just the very best carbon remover I've ever found, particularly for older baked on carbon. It's made by KANO LABS, the same people who make KREEN~!!
