Probably a bit far for you to drive to Quantico, VA.

Tommy, both Lodi, WI and Harris, MN have 1000yd ranges.  Are you shooting High Power or BPCR?  I shoot BPCR at both ranges. Lodi has a shoot on Mother's day weekend and the last weekend in September.  $45 for the shoot in May and $65 for the one in Sept. as it includes a pig roast.  Harris has a shoot around the last weekend in June and about the last weekend in August.  Cost is $25 for each.  I haven't seen any published dates from either place yet for 2009.  Both ranges are very nice.  Harris just installed 20 concrete benches on the 1000 yd line for the high power shooters.  The Lodi club follows the ASSRA rules and Harris is very similar.  Bob

I would like to shoot the BPCR at that range. 45-70 peabody I have only shot a couple 200 yard matchs. I am shooting a 500 gain spearpoint. What do you shoot at a 1000 yards? I will put both dates on the calander for this summer Hope to meet you there. Tommy

Tommy, sounds like you're new to the LR matches so here are a few things that you can prepare for.  Make sure that your rear staff is capable of making elevation at that range.  You will probably need between 150 and 160 pts more elevation from your 200yd setting to make 1000yds.  Bullet choice depends on your barrel twist and velocity.  Bullet length is more important than bullet nose shape.  For example, I shoot a Postell style bullet in my 45-90 with a barrel twist of 1-18" at around 1295 fps.  It's 1.45" long and that bullet seems to be stable at 1000yds.  45-70's can be a little capacity challenged at the longer ranges, however many people make them shoot very well.  Some will duplex to boost velocity and others will shoot a bullet with the first couple driving bands reduced in size so they can seat the bullet farther out and get more black powder in the case.  I do not know enough about ballistics to make much of a recommendation but you might not want to shoot a bullet any longer than 1.4".  When you say spire pt, are you talking "real pointy"?  If so, they tend to slump more on firing and you should be shooting bullets around 1-20 hardness.  You don't need to go out and buy a chrony as many times you can have loads tested at the range before you shoot.  Just shooting a match or two will also let you know as things can really fall apart at 900 or 1000 yds.  Your best experience will come from actual shooting in the matches and talking to the other shooters.  One of the toughest nuts to beat at Lodi the last couple of years shoots a 45-70 and duplexes.  The winner of our June match at Harris last year shot a 45-70 with straight black in windy conditions. If the match is a NRA BP Target Rifle match.  The rule has changed, no duplex, (smokeless), only BP or Pyrodex.

I am wondering if the Lodi range is open to the public before the match so a guy can get some rounds down range? I think I live around an 1 1/2 away so I would like to shoot there. I have only shot duplex loads so it nice to know that will be able to shoot that there. Thank you to all the others that have replied. Tommy Auger

This is not exactly correct. NRA rules do allow duplexing, but it is at the discretion of the match director.  Any given NRA match may or may not allow it, but it would be stated on the match flyer.

The Lodi match are not NRA matches, although close enough to not make any difference. Actually, they are sanctioned by the ASSRA. Duplexing is allowed at Lodi.

Tommy, here is the website address for the Winnaquah Gun Club which holds the shoots at Lodi.  It hasn't been updated yet for 2009 but you should be able to get some of your questions answered by contacting a member.  Bob
