I am never going to shot compition. But I want my High Wall 38-55 to shoot better than I can shoot! And I seem to hear a lot of good things about the GM barrel's. But then i hear that Badger is the best, or Douglas! So I guess I am asking is he Green Moutain barrels a good shootable barrel?
Thanks ACE

Greg,

The Gunsmith Glenn Fewless, a regular contributor to the ASSRA Forum, a Guild Member, and the Gunsmith assembling and finishing this years ASSRA Single Shot Rifle, uses Green Mountain Barrels on his own single shot rifles.

If a man of his great gunsmithing ability uses them, you can bet the farm that they are good. Glenn is a very good Long Range BP target rifle competitor.

I just wish GM had an outlet over here in the U/K.

Green Mountain, Badger, Douglas, Shilen, RKS all make good barrels, sometimes a great barrel and once in a while a clunker.

You pays your money you takes your chances.

P.S. a poor fitting of the barrel to the action or a poor chambering job makes a hummer barrel a clunker. So buying the barrel gets you only half way home.

Hi there Harry Eales:

If you are interested in procuring a Green Mountain cartridge barrel, one of their U.S. retailers is "Track of the Wolf" which is a mail order house.  Please see (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) for details.

The question becomes, do current U.S. laws forbid the shipment of rifle barrels in export trade.  I have not researched that issue, but would be glad to help my Geordie friend with such additional information that you may require.

How are things in Northumberland these days ?

Don't ship them as rifle barrels. They are "Heavy guage spiral groove tubeing". They only become a rifle barrel after they are fitted and chambered.

Greg - I guess you didn't believe me when I responded to your same question on another forum that Green Mountain makes good barrels

As I said, my 'El Cheapo' vintage 2003 H&R with the 38-55 GM barrel can knock down Rams consistently at 500m and the 45-70 GM barrel can put bullets in a 48x82" target at 1000yds .... Why wouldn't Green Mountain be good barrels?  And shooting black powder with a vernier sight to boot!  Plus I even provided you with the link shooting the 45-70 ... Johnboy, if you used a Borchardt or Hepburn or hiwall people would take your barrel advice serious. I know, it shouldnt make a difference, but it does. Thats just the way it is. Lol !   Grin

Gun barrels are export controlled, you can take a risk but be prepared to pay the penalty if caught.  The controls are not hard to comply with, you can use a broker who will do it all for you, at a price. It's just a couple of forms though.

Chances of getting out of the US without a problem are good. Getting into another country mis declared chances of sucess are not good at all.
