Whitetails with a single-shot

Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. limits east Texas hunters to 5 deer of which 2 can be bucks.  Our lease limit is also 5 deer but only one buck and it must be 8-points or larger.  We’ve spotted a few smaller bucks, some 8-pointers, but I have not seen what I consider a nice buck within reasonable range, so I bagged a fat doe during opening weekend.  Texas’ extended season ends on 1/17 (limited to does) so I’m headed to the lease this weekend.  Need one more for sufficient meat to last until next season.

Just to legitimize this thread I thought I’d mention I’ll be using a single shot rifle.  It’s a custom .50 cal. caplock muzzleloader (topped with a Leatherwood 18” Wm Malcolm style scope to compensate for aging eyes).  Load is 90 gr of Goex 3F with a 177 gr patched round ball.  It should be good out to 100 yds tops, but nothing further.

For a little humor, all you deer hunters turn on your speakers and click on the following site.

Oops, I see I have a couple of errors in my original post.  The extended season actually end on 1/18 (typo on my part) and it is legal to take both does and spike bucks.
