Newbie Barrel Question

New to this sight and have a question(s) on purchasing a new .22 barrel  for a CPA 44 1/2.

I have heard of Ron Smith Gain Twist barrels out of Canada. Are his gain twist barrels the same that H Pope used to make? Are they worth using vs. linear rifling? What twist ratio would you recommend? Left or right hand twist have any advantage? Etc.......

Sorry for so many questions, but this site seems to have the knowledge I am seeking. I am a recent convert from the high power game.

Thank you,

Carol

Well there really isn't a pounded in stone answer!!!!
Many of us on both sides the boarder use Ron's barrels and yes most use gain twist single point cut barrels like the ones Pope made.  And many many winners in this game are using his barrels so if you ask me yes they are good and I think gain twist has advantages with our modern powder that Pope would have died for.......... I believe that with modern components the gain twist has an advantage in all disciplines of the shooting sport and now there are a lot of people using them with great success in many different games....
As far as twist is concerned it truly is best to talk to him and he can be reached at 1-403-631-2405........
I too left the high power game for this one and man what a game..
Straight shooting..

Maybe Charlie Persons (rimfire) will jump in and answer this question. He is probably the most qualified to do so, and he also has an RKS barrel he has been doing well with.

Are the 22RF barrels as made by RKS gain twist, I thought they were regular twist barrels.   RKS makes a fine barrel [have one] but I have never read anything that lead me to beleive that gain-twist was superior---if they were superior wouldn't all the barrel makers offer a gain-twist.       leadball

Am a Douglas fan myself.  They win a lot of matches and are avalable on short notice. Small makers are great but make sure you can get delivery in a reasonable time.  CPA probably fits more Douglas than anything else.

Notice the Election Day matches WSU held. Douglas was in the top finishers more than any other barrel.  Although winner used a RKS I believe.

My opinion is any of the top makers produce a good barrel. It's the fit up that makes the difference. Chamber and headspace.

RKS will make you a linear twist or gain - your choice - he perfers to use 416R stainless but will make I believe 4140 CM barrels.
I believe he makes an excellent barrel .  I also believe that chambereing is as important as the barrel.  And if you are going to go with the best of those then you need to shoot top notch ammo as well.
The only rifle that I have that I feel will shoot with my RKS barreled BSA is my Eric Jhonson barreled and chambered Creighton Audette Ballard.
I don't know if this answers any of your questions or not - but remember the guy pulling the trigger has to put some effort into this equation also.  and a good night to all - the rimfire - cdpersons

I now have 2 RKS barrels and am about to order a third for a project. All barrelmakers can and do turn out hummers ans clunkers. sometimes there is no apparent reason for why one shoots well and one does not. As boats has said the fitting of the barrel to the receiver and the chambering of the barrel has a lot to do with it. But since RKS has come on the scene it a large percentage of their barrels seem to be making good scores. Both the barrels that I own are superior quality, which is why I am going with RKS for this new project.
When discussing the barrel choice for the ASSRA raffle rifle with a gunsmith friend he opined that Ron Smith makes a better barrel than Harry Pope. A strong statement. He backed it up by pointing out that Popes barrels had a reputation for being finicky while none that he had come across had any trouble in getting their RKS to shoot well. A strong statement to say the least.
In the end I’ll go with that great mid 20th century philosopher Popeye said” You pays your money you takes your chances.
