How to Tint a Glas-Bed Epoxy ?

You all know the famous Glas-Bed kits that come from Iowa in the green box (which is the Gel variety) ?  Well, you get the two tubs, one is the resin and the other is the hardener.  They also include a tiney amount of brown dye.

I'm out of the brown dye (yea, I know they sell the dye seperately) and was wondering if there might be a substitue coloring tint that can be used with these glass bedding kits ?  Perhaps shoe polish, etc. ?  Anyone ever face this situation ?

The problem is that any dye that has a grease base will probably act like the "release agent" and the stuff will never harden.

Anyone know how to successfully solve this situation?  Thanks guys !

Go to a good body shop/boat repair shop and get pigment for epoxy used in repairing fiberglass.  Or, find a good paint store and get pigment for acrylic paint.

Hey ... Thanks David !    Smiley     Smiley

I remember that you previously worked in Montezuma for big "B", and was hopefull you would reply.   Wink

Am I right, any coloring agent with wax, oil or grease base will destroy the bonding quality of the epoxy ... or delete it entirely ?

After wasting a lot of money I ordered brown dye from Brownell's, I tried everything, shoe polish, food coloring.nail polish. clothing dye, nothing worked--spent three times the amount of the Brownell's dye.   leadball

The epoxy and acrylic paint pigments don't have wax, oil, water, or frog snot   Wink to ruin the epoxy bedding compound.  Don't use acrylic paint itself; you just need the pigment for it.  And a very small amount goes a long way!  And yes, the green is the gel, red is liquid.  If you need to repair wood, use the red box stuff...it's about five times as strong as the gel for use as a glue.

I've used both gel and regular AG, but I never thought the gel set up as hard.

The black and brown tints that are sold for these color the AG well. Just takes a tad, not much.
