I wax all my  "Antique" rifles with floor wax, Keeps them from rusting and avoids sticky oil build up or migrating into the wood.  My Black Powder Schuetzen do the same thing since it's wiped with a water - antifreeze mixture while shooting and when cleaning. Wax protects the wood and fills the cracks and spots water could hide.

Learned it in a museum, they waxed all the metal/wood artifact's.
