Stevens 44 1/2 by DE HAAS Value?

I have a real nice Stevens model 44 1/2 in 222 Mag. it has a color cased receiver, double set triggers, very nicely figured and checkered wood, slightly tapered semi heavy barrel and a Redfield one piece scope mount. The barrel is marked on the left side, just above the fore-arm wood, ahead of the receiver ring "1974 FRANK DE HAAS ORANGE CITY, IOWA .222 MAG."

I would like to know if this rifle was made by Frank De Haas and if it was made by FDH would it have any special collector's value.

Thanks,

Marcos (elalto)

That's where he was from.  Looking at the rifle, it appears that he did decent wood work, but his lever alteration is typical of those I've seen in his books...useful but not pretty.  I would imagine that someone looking for a single shot that knows the name would probably pay 10-20% over the value of the same rifle unmarked.  His son, Mark de Haas, is in Missouri, and does (or did) muzzle loading gunsmithing.  Sorry, but I can't find his phone number.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The woodwork looks much better than the few pictures of DeHaas rifles I've seen previously. Wonder if he had it done by someone else?

Heh, heh,

Too damn much for those who want to buy one, and not enough for those who want to sell one. But Hell, that's life.

Regards,

Harry

If you do a Gunbroker.com search for Stevens 44, it will bring up not only the lowly Model 44 but also the 44 1/2.  Prices from not too bad to start all the way to OMG!   Shocked

Problem is it's been sporterized and that limits the market as well as dollars. Lots of guys like my friend the Tar Baby like those guns though.  Bet he knows what it's worth.
