After getting a bit off topic elsewhere, I thought I'd start a new topic to see if there are any singleshot enthusiasts that use their old or new singleshot rifles for hunting, and if so, what type of hunting you do?

I enjoy squirrel hunting, have a CPA made up just for the sport, has a Unertl 6X small game scope.

not old stuff... but I've been using a 45-70 Contender pistol with a 14" barrel & Burris 2-7X scope as my main deer hunting gun for years ( we are in shot gun zone, but are allowed hand gun use )... but I reciently pulled out a 10" 30-30 barrel & set it up with a Burris 2-7 scope, & am finding that combo particularly accurate... I pulled it out for Mrs Magnum to use this year on deer... but it's proven to shoot well enough if she decides not to go... I may use it instead...

also have a 16.5" 45 Colt / 410 vent rib barrel on a Contender carbine, that probably has shot more pesky rabbits than anything... but we have just reciently gotten an influx of red pine squirrels, that it seems to do a fine job with ( shooting .410 of course )

I also have an old Cooey 22 single shot that I keep around for kids to use that come visit... it's set up with a 2-7 rim fire scope, but shoots better than I do... so the kids have no trouble hitting what they are shooting at, if they do thier part...

I built my 45-70 Martini for hunting, I just don't go to rifle zone too much, so I haven't finished dialing in the multi leaf safari sights to distance yet, or put a finish on the base metal, which I plan to do, after the rear sight is regulated...

Started hunting with SS in the early 70's, ML.  Switched to BPCR about 10 years ago.  I do use a 2 barrel shot gun ML for birds.  Started that in the early 80's.

The only frustration encountered was dove hunting with a double twenty.  Reloading like crazy with birds flying all around Grin Grin Grin

Use a contender with either a .22 match barrel or the 45 colt/410 combo barrel. Still favor the H&R topper 20 gauge for shotgun even though I have a couple pumps. And Have gone with my .577 snider smoothbore loaded with #6 shot.

A lot more I WANT to take out, just never get the chance. Cry

I know the pic is small, but just to the left of the message area is a pic of my CPA. I have a Douglas #2 bbl, 28", Has sporter stock with a loop lever. The double set triggers are great for squirrel hunting, I myself am glad I got the double set over the single trigger. Have a good day.

Iowa is shotgun country, so I use a Greener Martini (Navy Arms  Co.) with a rifled 20 ga. barrel on it for Bambi's big brother.

Hi All,

With the exception of a Bear hunt two years ago, in Canada, I have hunted with single shots exclusively for the last six years. I have used my No.1s (243 & 218 Bee) my TCR '83 (223, 22-250, 243 & 7'08) and my FBW Model K in 6x50R Mag for Hog, Coyote, Bobcat and Ground Squirrels. My first firearm (1958) was a Remington Improved Model Six falling block rifle in 22LR, I took at least one train load of small game with that rifle!

I've used various calibers in Contender pistols and carbines, my 40-65 Remington Rolling block, martini 22's for squirrels and my #1 45-70 for deer last year. Managed to take a doe last year with it with only an hour left to hunt. I have a .32 S&W rook rifle that I am going to use on squirrels here next weekend when the season is open and I have the time.

Hi,

I am in San Antonio, waiting out Ike to see if I can fly home tomorrow.

I came to Texas last week to hunt javelina with my BSA cadet in 30-30.
The javelina had made themselves scarce, so I took a nice meat hog instead.

Upon my return from Pearsall, TX where I hunted, I picked up another martini, just stocked by Dominick Pisano.

Here are some pictures...if i do it right.

I have taken deer and a 350# black bear with my ultimate sisgle shot, .54 flintlock.  Monstor elk and mountain goats seem to be able to keep out of range Smiley

I live in N. California and mostly hunt deer with my takedown high wall in 7x57R caliber.  The action is from a high wall shotgun.  Ron Long worked up the barrel for me and I re-stocked it to keep from banging up the original shotgun wood while hunting.  I started out with a Lyman Alaskan scope on it, but switched to a Weaver K6 a couple years ago.  Have also killed a few coyotes with this gun.  Also have a high wall with a nickel steel barrel in .32-40 caliber that I have killed a few bucks with.  Will attach a picture if I can figure out how to make it work.

Vall;

I'm still in San Antonio!  Spent the day with stockmaker, Dominick Pisano.  Getting to the Vancouver gun show was out of the question, as Dominick had to be home by 5pm.  Given its about 1800 miles each way, I didn't feel his Honda was up to the trip.

I was unable to post the pics, but I did email thrm to you.

Come on guys two pages already and nothing about...... what finer feeling on God's green earth than laying in a fresh mowed hay field and pushin a set trigger on a 219 Zipper or R2 Lovell while looking through the Lyman or Unertl at that big chuck standin up and smiling at you about 200 yards away. I gotta be honest however, I've been cheating on my oldtimer's a bunch since I sold off some stuff and picked up a second 20TAC, this one a Dakota model 10 with English walnut and a 26" Lilja bbl. You just put the crosshairs on anything out to about 350 yards and when you pull the trigger they just fall over without a twitch and you get to watch it all through the scope.....simply amazing caliber. This is one of many we cleaned up this week in South Dakota.

(It's the least gross of all the carnage shots we took.)

One for the freezer with my 45/70 and 457125 Gov't bullet. Received the bullet mold in trade from 38 Cal... thanks again David!

Also filled tags this year with my Ruger #1 in 7mm STW and a 50's era Husky FN Mauser... (that's one of those funny guns with a steel rod and handle thingy that slides into the action) Wink

For squirrels I like to use my #4 RB in 32 S&W long with factory wadcutters, for the last few years, a 260 Browning Low Wall for deer and a Ruger #3 in 45-70 for bear.

I have used single shot rifles (exclusively) for hunting since the late 1970's.  Ruger No.1's in .22-250, 7mm Rem Mag and .30-338 Mag.

Currently building a 5.6X50R Martini Cadet for shooting "ground dogs".

Got myself a tasty little Manitoba jack tonight with the cadet Smiley

I put the gun together using a .223 fluted varmint barrel from a Savage bolt gun. Utilizing the original .223 chamber, I cut the barrel back just enough to use a necked down, full length, 357 Max case. After cutting a rim and rethreading it I was good to go. I haven't prettied it up yet, two years later Undecided, but it's such a shooter I don't care..... an honest 1/2 MOA or better consistantly.

55 grain Vmax, 17.2 grains H4198, Rem. 7 1/2 primers.

Anyone care for jacks done in the slowcooker? I love'm!!! Cheesy

Best Regards,

Darryl
