1885 Winchester "Trapper" scope base question
Aug 28th, 2008 at 6:12pm
Print Post
Hi folks

I just purchased one of the Japanese made Winchester High Walls.
It is the "trapper" model in 30-40 Krag.    The receiver and action
are drilled and tapped.  I would like to put a scope on this rifle.
However, as far as I have been able to find, the scope bases are
for octagonal barrels.

Does anyone know of some scope bases that would work on this
rifle ?   (pics enclosed)

thanks kindly,  Chris

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

You might want to take it to your local dealer and look through his Weaver two piece bases. I'dbet there is something in that style that would fit the contour and hole spacing. Might check into Browning singleshots too, as they made some round barrels with similar hole setup.

Have you fired that rifle?  I have a full-sized Uberti in .30/40 and with loads that duplicate the original (220 grain jacketed @ 2,000 fps) it is a real adventure.  But just imagine yourself crawling over a blowdown and going after a moose with that in your hand!

The fireball from this rifle should only be exceeded by the
45-70 Trapper model.   60 grains of powder in a 16 inch
barrel...... BAWOOOOMMM !!

I'll be wearing electronic muffs for sure...

Browning made the Model 78 eith either an octagonal or a heavy round barrel and supplied their copy of a Redfield style 2-piece base with the rear mount on the reciever and the forward one on the barrel.

Don't know the diameter of your barrel at the front base but can measure my 78 barrel to see how close it is when I get home tonight.  From your photo it looks like your barrel is very similar to the weight and diameter of my round barrel .30-06 barrel at the the location of the front base.  If this is the case, you shold be able to use any base listed for the round barrel Browning Model 78.

That barrel diameter would be much appreciated.   Good to know about
the round barrel 78's.   I'm still new to Single Shot knowledge.

thanks kindly,  Chris

Chris, your rifle is a Winchester-marked version of the Browning 1885, not the earlier B-78.  There are some differences, mostly internal, but barrel diameter may be on the list with your short barrel version.  Your best bet is to get the barrel diameter at the sight base, and the hole spacing, both in thousandths of an inch, and have a competent gunsmith pick out a set of Weaver bases for it.

16.5 inches

My book about 1885 Winchesters say the "lightweight carbine" low walls
were 15 inches.   But our laws frown on that number.

Smiley

When I first saw these for sale I thought they were just a figment of someone's
imagination and a spin-off of the 1894 "Trapper".   But after I read John Campell's
book and saw that the "lightweight carbine" looked very much like these later
era 1885 "trapper" carbines, the rifle suddenly became more appealing.  I don't
like the cheesey gold blade on the front sight, but I do like the fact it is drilled
and tapped for a scope.   Should be a very handy rifle for hunting, especially out
of a vehicle.  32 inches overall length.

I know I'm a hopeless obso, but I sort of cringe & shake my head when the barrel on a high wall is stamped "or visit (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)".  That tends to push me towards blasphemy. OTOH, I still remember crawling over a blowdown after a moose and dragging along my Peabody sidehammer carbine with a Numerich .45-70 barrel with a rear sight made from a razor blade and a front sight filed from a silver dime.  Lacking in authenticity, but that still qualified as high adventure in my ledger.

Waterman, it looks to me like a sticker on the barrel.  If you look closely, the texture is different on either side of the writing, and you can just barely make out what I think is an edge.  I hope...   Roll Eyes

Guys,

Yep, it's a sticker or peel off label.  All the recent Winchester rifles have the label.  I peel it off prior to taking photos of the BPCR models for my Internet listings.

Here's a better pic of the sticker that is on these rifles.
My Traditional Hunter had it on there too.

Chris

Diameter of my barrel at the rear screw hole for the forward mount is 0.970.  Hole spacing is 0.510.

The Browning bases are a copy of the Redfield/Leupold type.
