LOL.. OK Mori.. I'll put you down as voting for BLACK targets Smiley

Honestly, after shooting highpower for years, I can't understand how the heck the folks that like the red side with iron sights SEE the darned thing at all.. but to each their own.

I'll throw another can of gasoline on the fire by mentioning my shooting buddy who can't see red...either the ASSRA red or the ISSA red...and so does not shoot iron sight matches.  On black targets, he was shooting highpower as a high Master, so it's not as if he can't shoot irons.

IMO, red is a less-than-ideal color for iron sight shooting. To my eye reflection of light from the red bull in bright sunlight gives an imprecise aiming point. It may just be my eyes (I am talking about when that was plural so no wisecracks!) but the above-mentioned condition is much like trying to aim precisely with a red-insert front sight on a handgun.
I am talking iron sights here; with scope it does not seem to matter.

When I shot a couple of matches w/ irons @ Etna Green I was told by the schuetzenmeister that range rules allowed use of either side of the target, as long as I shot the proper target.    This has been the same rule followed at all ASSRA matches I have been in through VA, NC and MD, so I guess it is pretty widely practiced on the right side of the country.  This may give you large or small bulls, or red or black bulls, depending on the specific target.  Since the rings are the same size, the scoring will be equal, shot for shot.   Smiley

From what I have seen so far, it seems like the orange tint to the red is of at least some help for most, but is not universally loved.  The call for a redder red is not all that loud, and frankly, it seems like if that is what you need, turning over and shooting black is the way to go.  Pretty unscientific for a college instructor in Biology, but I'm still on Summer Break!    Cool

I don't know about others, but I get better groups when I paste one of them Birchwood adhesive back red-orange circles on the bulls eye of a target at any range

Hi guys,
I'm an off-and-on lurker and recent joiner-of-the-group.
I am a newbie here but think I have some usefull comments on this one.

My local shooting club has a Wednesday .22 rimfire fun shoot every week.
They use the Redfield "five diamonds" red sighting-in target at 50 yards on an outside range.
It is shot in 5 positions...
1.Big middle diamond is shot offhand,
2.small upper left diamond is shot kneeling,
3.small upper right diamond is shot sitting,
4.small lower right diamond is shot prone,
5.small lower left diamond is shot off the bench

It is scored....
center diamond is 5 points, next diamond is 4 points, next is 3 points, next is 2 points, and outer diamond is 1 point.
All diamonds are added up for a total score.

I shoot an original Springfield 1922m2 bolt action with the original rear peep and thin front blade. All the other shooters are using newer bolt actions with scopes.

I always had a terrible time seeing the smaller red diamonds in the rear peep even after trying different sized apertures.
But I found that my score was always so much better on the black practice targets that I made copies of.
So I decided to take one of the red targets to Staples and had it copied in black (since it was a "fun shoot" and the other shooters didn't mind), and it made all the difference in the world.
My score almost doubled and I was setting high scores every week.

I think you should be able to shoot whatever color target that you see best as long as the target dimensions are all the same.
Some people see one color better than another and some can't see color at all.

Just my two cents,
Thanks,
dave
