Brushy Mt Match

Returned last night from the Green Frog run Brushy Mt Schuetzen Match. Once again did not dissapoint!! While I missed the Friday leg of the event Saturday was great, with some tough wind to try to dope, which I didn't and let it through 2 shots left making an otherwise nice target suffer!!
The Host club, Brushy Mt, provided another good lunch and beautiful facilities. And the folks hosting AND shooting, couldn't have been better. Had a few new shooters and looks like Froggy recruited a couple of more for the Fall match and hopefully new ASSRA members.
Looking forward to the Spet match and hope to see more of you there!
They are talking about gas prices getting as high as $7.00 a gallon by next summer, so if gas prices are keeping you away, I would suggest saving for the fall match this year, as next year might be more expensive  to travel. And I don't think we can fit our guns in one of those Smart Cars you see popping up all over!

That much more reason to get one of those nifty takedown Hi-Walls!  Wink

I am guilty of being one of the new shooters and I traded rifles halfway through the first day so I didn't get much shooting done but I had a great time! Like MerwinBray mentioned the facility was great, the lunches provided were first class, the match ran smoothly, and the people were very friendly! I will be in a class at the end of Sept but I plan on driving down for the day Saturday.

I was also at Brushy Mtn. this weekend. I've been an ASSRA member for over 10 years now, but this was the first ASSRA shoot I've attended (been active in NSSA for 30 yrs.).As expected, I had a really great time and met some mighty  friendly people. Some of the competitors even let others shoot their guns in the King match. I met Green Frog for only the second time, and he's gotten older, grayer and friendlier. Most importantly,I made some new contacts ( for trading shooting stuff ) and some new friends. I shall return...............jim smith [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen.  Brushy Mtn Club's members are proud of what is being accomplished there by a relatively small group of dedicated volunteers and they are anxious to be good hosts to as many of the shooting sports as possible and practical.  Although we, the Chinquapin shooters, were few in number this time for the schuetzen match, we were mighty in spirit, and the club members noticed and appreciated that.  With the cost of gas (and everything else) making the decision to trek off to a match a more significant one, those of us who organize matches really appreciate you for making the commitment to come and participate.  One of the other event organizers (sporting clays) told me that every organizer he talked to said their events were down by as much as 25% this Summer.  Cry

Without shooters, a rifle range is just a golf course without the holes and sand traps!  Roll Eyes

Be sure and put the last Fri and Sat in September (the 26th and 27th) on your calendar to attend our next match.  We are planning on specially emphasizing the Dell/Hudson for the serious shooters and the Buffalo (over .40 cal) Iron Sight Matches for the casual single shot enthusiast.  I think there should be something for everyone.   Wink

Frogenmeister,

I want to say I really apreciate the several classes at the match. With my 44.5 in limbo and my martini on the fritz, it was good to know I could dust off the roller and put some bigger holes in paper and still have a good time!

I know many matches, in fact, I believe most, allow big bore along side everything else. It is a good way to get some new shooters out and gives others, like myself, another option if something else shooting right. There are a lot of big bore guys out there and this is a good place to come shoot them. Gives a chance to see what they do on the bench and how much the wind really does effect the heavier bullets as I was so rudely reminded of this past weekend.

I'll admit to being geographically challenged.  Where is Brush Mountain and the match?  I'm still happily a recluse behind the Redwood Curtain and with the price of gas I could not attend anyhow.  But it sounds is if everybody had a grand time.

Brushy Mt. Club is located just North of Gretna, VA. Beautifully keep facility. What the Frogenmeister has accomplished in getting this match hosted at Brushy Mt. is nothing short of Herculean. The membership are die hard shotgunners who host some very large state matches. They have built a very nice 300 yard range for our use and have welcomed us with open arms. The membership is very concerned that we enjoy our visits.

Waterman, if you look at a map of the state of Virginia, a whole country away from you, unfortunately, the Brushy Mountain Club is approximately in the middle.  In fact, we refer proudly to the area as "Central Virginia."  We are on the Eastern side of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, those old mountains that were already being worn smooth when the Rockies were still on the drawing board, trying to get their plans approved in Sacramento.  Grin

We are only 15-20 miles South of Lynchburg Regional Airport, and shooters could conceivably get here that way if determined enough.  As others have mentioned, we are a small club, most of which is devoted to shooting at flying pottery discs, but our 300 yd range makes a pretty good place for a schuetzen match and we are thinking of trying to expand our program into at least some sort of silhouettes.  What we lack thus far in numbers, we are trying to make up in enthusiasm, and it is part of our goal to continue the tradition started 90 miles West of us by Charlie Dell when he started Chinquapin Schuetzenverein.  Cool

We would welcome some left coasters or other far-flung visitors, and as we grow our event, the shotgunners have said they would be supportive to the idea of expanding the range to have more firing points.  PM for a set of directions, if anyone is interested.

Regards,
Charlie Shaeff
