Several yrs. ago, I bought a cased Schoyen barreled Stevens 441/2. The leather case is stamped " J STEVENS A&T CO." Is anyone aware of Stevens making hard leather cases during the time of the 441/2? Thanks for any info.

I can't give you a definitive "yes", but it would not surprise me at all. The best I can offer you for proof is their February, 1898 catalog (page 71) which pictures "Leather Victorian Cases", either "Embossed with Nickel-Plated Trimmings" or "Embossed, Brass Trimmings, with Rod Pocket and Name Plate". Prices ranged from $3.50 to $7.00 depending upon options.

I have a friend who has a cased two barrel 44 that appears factory, and I would guess it's from the post 1900 era, which would be close to the 44 1/2 production.
Of course I guess it could have bee with the gun forever and still be old aftermarket, but it too has the same nameplate.

Many thanks for the comments. The interior of this case was in disrepair. Had it restored by Marvin Huey. If anyone can email me a copy of the Stevens catalog page with description of their cases, it would be appreciated.

I have 1901, 1905, 1910, and 1927 Stevens catalogs, and none of them describe or list hard cases. The only cases offered by Stevens in these catalogs are soft canvas cases.
I wouldn't take this as meaning they didn't offer them, but I think there were so few provided that they were neve a cataloged item.-Vall

Thanks 32-35 for the catalog page. My case is box style full leather on exterior and felt originally inside with brass hardware. Not sure someone didn't stamp lid to make it appear as a Stevens.

From my understanding of reading a lot of Stevens Catalog reprints and all the other literature that I can get my hands on, there is a good chance that this could be a factory piece. You could factory special order just about anything you were willing to pay for back then. I have a stock on one of my guns that I am prety sure is factory, but have not been able to confirm it. Unfortunately there is probably  no way to confirm your case either.

ACGOULD  Thanks for the very informative photo. My case is very similar to these pictured including what I can see about the interior layout, but my case has only 1 leather handle.  Best

the hingeges and claps are of the period and the gun is a 22/15/60 with a lot of factory upgrades including engraving
