Martini rifle with side lever
May 9th, 2008 at 4:13pm
Print Post
I just found a very unusual rifle and I am wondering if anyone else has one, or has seen one. It appears to be a swiss Martini with a lever on the right side of the reciever to drop the breech block, no underlever ant all. I have enclosed a picture. In this picture the breech is open, when closed the lever moves forward along side the reciever.
Thanks
Mike

Whoa.. deja vu..
A friend just sent me this link to a rifle for sale that looks very simillar (if not identical, except for the embellishments).

Dave,

Some rectifications - Peabody was the inventor of the Peabody rifle, not of the Martini rifle - that was Martini.
Also, the modifications made by Martini were of such a radical nature as to create a major modification of the Peabody design, making it in fact a new design.  Don't forget, as from the availability of the Martini, even Providence Tool started manufacturing it, and stopped Peabody rifle production.  They even paid royalties to ol' Friedrich!
FWIW, the tilting block wasn't even a Peabody invention - it already existed under the form of a paper-cartridge breechloader of civil war design, the name of which escapes me right now.
Saying the Martini is just a slightly modified Peabody is like saying that J.M. Browning took the Sharps design and lightly modified it to make his 1885, taking all the credit for it...  After all, it also has a falling block.

Getting off my soapbox now,

G.

Well, sad to say I missed this one at the auction today but I did pick up another nice old single shot at the same auction. I was the lucky bidder on a Frank Wesson Midrange No. 2, and this is the one I was really interested in anyway, so I feel lucky. When I recieve this I will post pictures for everyone. It is in half way nice shape but the nickle plating is really dulled but there. Maybee elbow grease will make it shine. Is there any of our guys out there with one of these that I could compare with. Cowans just sold an egraved one that was real nice for a whole bunch, I think it went for over $14,000. I can at least post a picture of the one I got off the auction site.

The word Kammerladen or something similar comes to mine (darned CRS again) when I saw that first picture. As I understand the function of the side mounted lever is to rotate the breech block so's it can be loaded with either powder and ball or cartridge and by rotating the lever swings the block from the loading to firing position.
