Hepburn qestion - .40-50 or .40-70?

My Hepburn (heavy barrel, double triggers) is marked .40 17/8 under the barrel but a chamber cast revealed a long chamber with the rifling starting approx 2.7" down the bore. A .40-70 SS case chambers easily. The barrel has the standard Remington 5 land rifling with a nominal groove dia of .408", twist is 1 in 20". The bore is in very good condition. It all looks factory original. As a test I loaded up some .40-70 SS & .40-50 SS cartridges using a Rapine .407" 300 gr slug and they both shot OK.
My question is .... What have I got here? Was the .40 1 7/8 normally chambered with a a lot of freebore? Have any of you .40-50 SS owners seen this with other Remingtons. Or is it an incorrectly marked barrel?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

One of my Hepburns is in .40-70 and the marking under the barrel is,"40.2 1/2" I'd guess if your's is marked the way it is that it's been reamed out, or wrongly marked.-Vall

spud; The 40 1 7/8 SS is a paper patched chamber [ I think] you might make another chamber cast and look at it very carefully. Someone that really knows may chime in here.    leadball

Leadball, Thanks for the comment. I did another chamber cast and it's a smooth cylinder (no sign of a recut/lengthened chamber) with a very slight taper starting at around 2.7" (from the mouth of the chamber) with the rifling starting at about 2.8 ". Following your line about the .40-50 SS being a paper patch round I checked an old guide to WRA Co. cartridges and the PP is listed there as having an overall loaded length of 2.64". If anyone else with a Rem Hepburn in .40 1 7/8 SS has made a chamber cast, I"d be interested in details of the chamber length and also the rate of twist. Thanks

I forgot to add that I'd also be very interested in similar details of  chamber casts of .40-70 SS in Rem Hepburns (for comparison). Thanks
