No. there is nothing in the book that has information on dot reticule. I wonder if you could use a drop of crazy glue to make the dot.

I beleieve that George Mitchell used T.K. Lee recticles in his scopes when he was still building them - I know its not making your own but as I recall they were not all that expensive - they install their recticles in scopes but I believe that they will also sell just the recticle - doesn't hurt to ask.

Dead_eye,
OK, I've jumped into the project. The lenses & brass rod are sitting in front of me. You give the fastenal link for the tubing, but don't mention what length will be needed.

What length of 3/4" tubing should I order?

Great thread,
Thanks,
Ron

Hi RJM
the lenght that i order is 36" so i have a little playing room with the length of the scope. but the frist thing is to figure what gun it is going on and weather the scope will be full length or shorter like the unertl or stevens. once this is done then buy the length of tubing that is needed with a few extra inches to square the ends to the final size. or just buy a few extra feet so another one can be made at a later date. Dead_eye,
I went back & re-read the part about placing the lenses on the angle & finding the right place for the erector.

So, IF (a mighty big if) I have it right:
The length of the scope is somewhat arbitrary, using the same lenses. A position for the erector lens can be found to focus the scope whatever the distance between the objective & eye piece. Correct??

I have read that the scope on the Lyman Centennial Ruger #1 rifles were made with left over lenses from the old Lyman A5 scopes. The A5 is considerably shorter than the full length centennial, so this would suggest the length can be varied a good bit.

Using the same lenses, does the length of the scope affect the magnification, brightness, or clarity?

Thanks for your patience,
Ron

Hi RJM
you are correct the same lenses can be used for any length of scope. the magnification should be the same no matter what length of scope is made. the clarity will be the same with any length because the cell are layed out the same way no matter if the scope is 17" or 34". the brightness is determined by the reducer that is placed in the scope to control the light that enters the lenses.
there will be a video on you tube tomarrow about laying out the cells.
when it is done up loading i will post.
glad to help
john

Hey Dead-Eye !!!

As a collector of old sights and scopes, I can tell you that you have now opened up a whole new future for all of those poor old broken scopes in my junk box…

I have added your instructions, pictures and video(s) to my list of special references and will soon be building my own scope for my collection of single shot rifle’s..

Thanks again !!!

Ed…..

Dead-Eye
Do you make the light reduction cell 3/4" long.
How far back from the cross-hair cell do you put the light reducton cell.
2"  3"  or do you have to play with this?
I've got everything to build a couple of scopes.  Turning my cells today.
Thanks
Bob
