Anyone build up a DS Cole action from castings?

I've had a Frontier Armory DS Cole casting kit on my "project shelf" for a while now..
I went into "decision paralysis" over a few details, but now want to bring the project back to the forefront.

I have a couple questions for anyone who has completed, or has HAD completed for them, a DS Cole action.

I'm concerned about the relative lack of firing pin retraction (the block trying to break the tip of the firing pin off before the block top engages the top of the hammer and retracts it).

Is this an actual problem or am I over-thinking things again?

I'm also interested in any other "hidden gotcha's" you may have encountered... problems you ran into fitting things up that you didn't expect. I've though through almost every part/process, but as always, I'm sure I'm missing something!

I'm most concerned about cutting the barrel recess threads. I've got the theory down, but my lathe may not be rigid enough to hold the action on an angle plate, and cut the thread acceptably.  I need to just suck it up and try the setup to answer that question.

Any other experiences with the DS Cole; Positive or Negative, are appreciated!

Sorry...
Before the Block BOTTOM engages the top of the hammer...
It would be hard for the block TOP to engage the top of the hammer unless I REALLY put things together goofy!

The supplier used to be Wes Stanley at,  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
who got the castings kit from Rodney Storie, but from recent reports I've seen it looks like production has ceased. I'm not surprised, hundreds of folk have had difficulty in trying to contact the salesman Wes Stanley. I've never been able to get in touch with him, he never replied to Emails, phone calls or even letters over a period of several years.

There was a nice range of single shot rifle castings available, but they weren't like plastic model aircraft kits, they didn't just slot together, all parts needed considerable machining to finish them off.

Hi Paul - I've not built one, but did do some work on one for a friend quite a few years ago.  Seems to me I was fitting some of the pieces to adjust the "timing" so as to retract the pin sooner.  The action and parts had not been heat treated or hardened at that time so the movement was hard and dragging.  It cocked the hammer on opening as I recall.  Sorry I can't be of more help.
Regards, Joe

Paul, I don't know if Steve Durren posts here, but I talked with him in 2005 about one he was working on. At the time he was at Johnson's in Adrian, MI.

Here are the notes I wrote down after the conversation:

Quote:
The castings aren't the best. There is too little metal in some corners and the metal can't be polished properly there as a result. The cocking cam is in the wrong place for the hammer provided, and he has tried making a new one. Unless the hammer is on the cam after firing, it won't retract fast enough. He wonders if an inertia pin could be used, but agreed that with a ~3/4" thick breech, there may be trouble getting enough inertia. I mentioned the Meacham high wall with a coil spring & inertia pin, and he thought that might be of use. He thinks the cocking force will be ok but hasn't yet fitted the spring.

Several of the old actions -- including the Borchardt -- depend on the hammer or striker retracting due to movement of the breech. I read once this was more acceptable with the old black powder style firing pins, which were fatter and flatter tipped than the modern pins for high pressure smokeless rounds.
