It is with great regret to inform you that John passed away last Wednesday at the young age of 55. Not sure how many of you knew John, but he was one of the principal importers of martini rifles that many of us enjoy shooting. The following was the obituary posted on line from Front Royal VA where John had his store.

John M. Appleton

John M. Appleton, 55, of Fairfax, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Front Royal Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Dr. C. Thomas Rhyne. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U.S. Marine Corps.

John was born October 27, 1953 in Syracuse, NY son of the late John"Jack" Appleton and Dolores O. Appleton of Mason, Ohio. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was the owner of "The Gunshop at Front Royal" on Jackson Street. John was a member of the NRA and RNC.

Surviving along with his mother is his wife of 26 years Patricia A. Appleton of Fairfax; and one sister Amy Potts of Mason, Ohio. Along with his father he was preceded in death by a brother Mark Appleton, and a sister Sally Atkins.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Maddox Funeral Home, Inc. in Front Royal from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fisher House Foundation, Inc (a charity for wounded veterans and their families) 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850 (make checks payable to Fisher House Foundation, Inc.) or donate online at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

Sad news, John was a true gentleman, always something interesting in his shop. He truly enjoyed visitors and talking about fine guns.

I'll second everybody's comments here. I visited John's store from time to time and never knew him to be anything but a good guy and a straight shooter. It really sucks to see the good ones go.
You'll be missed, John

thanks for posting this.  Just met him once - same day as the Winter get-to-gether in New Market.  Very interesting shop and very much a person who was concerned about customers he'd never met before.

MI-Shooter,

Thank you for letting us know about John.

I am very, very saddened. I hope he is remembered by many of not only us single shot shooteres, but sportsman and military men of all disciplines. He was always willing to take the time to help you out.

God rest him and be with his Family.
